Hard at work. The base of that tree must be covered with wood chips.

Yeah, you would think that, but they seem to be pretty good at dispersing the wood chips so that the wind catches them and moves them away from the tree. Matter of fact, this is the same tree that another woodpecker made a cavity in back in June of this year.

They both made cavities, and then abandoned them when they were finished. I guess even birds have hobbies. :)
