New and want to have a happy and healthy snake

Hi,

I know there’s been so many discussions and advice but a lot is conflicting and I want to be a great snake mummy! We got a corn snake about a month ago (so he’s now about 3 months old) and need to do his first full vivarium clean but could do with advice regarding his branch, do I soak it In hot water first and then put it in the oven for half an hour? Do you have to do that every month?

Also, his water bowl is currently on the same side as his heat mat, he shed no problem but now concerned it might be too humid in there? What’s the best % humidity wise? Should I move his water bowl?
Thanks

Hi, welcome to the forum! For a branch, I would just clean any poop off of it, but I don't think a full sanitization every month is necessary. Seems like overkill. I would move the water bowl to the cool side of the tank though.

Thank you for your reply.

We’ve just done the clean and put stuff back but now the humidity has shot up to 75. I know that’s too high. We’ve lowered the temp on his heat mat but Do we have to do anything else to quickly get the humidity down? Will it cause any damage? We have moved his water onto the cool side

Temporarily high humidity is not a problem. Their natural range is the southeastern United States, where there is often high humidity. You just want to ensure the substrate isn't super damp. Does the enclosure have a mesh lid?

I have had lots of problem with too much humidity in my snake room this year. I've had to alter racks and add a fan to the room to get it just right. I also added a de-humidifier, but don't think that this has had much of an impact.

Good luck!!
