It's "OK", but it's not the best. It dries the tank out and can be a fire hazard, not to mention snakes don't like light, so you have less chance of seeing him out. A properly regulated UTH is better. A 40 gal tank is pretty big too. The snake can live in a 20 long his whole life, but if you decide to go with the 40, make sure you provide lots and lots of hiding places and fake plants.
