Mean as a ticked off rattlesnake

Holy Cow

My ASF's finally had babies. So I went to change the water dish (they ate 3 water bottles), and WHAM out of the blue came 3 ASF's attacking me. Only one got me and luckily didn't break the skin. I heard they get very protective of their babies but it was stunning to see 3 of the 4 coming across a 20 gallon tank full speed. Like a deer in headlights, I just watched them until I relized what was going on (aka getting bit).

So just a warning to all they will attack if there are babies in the tank.

I have a couple of colonies of them. Fortunately, they are pretty sweet! The ones we have left, we handled a lot when they were little and culled off the parents. They still don't like being handled like other breeds of rodents, but at least they don't go all Cujo on us.

Good Luck,

Wayne

That's very interesting. I have 8 colonies and NONE of them are agressive. I have one male that goes nuts when I clean tanks and seperate him from the babies for a couple minutes. He doesn't get agressive but he runs around standing up trying to see them and then as soon as I put them back together, he has to check every one of them and almost seems to be making sure they are all there. He's a good papa! Oh and try useing glass water bottles or the completly rounded ones they have at Petco. Can't chew them!
