weight problem updated! got her to the vets

Missy

loves her little darlings
hello all

well now i took my skitzy to see the vet this evening, and it was not good news for me im afraid, he said that the signs (her bottom half is fat, the bulge under her neck, drinking a lot more) are all the same signs as when my missy eventually had to be put to sleep as she had kidney disease, for those of you who didnt read about my missy, you can here ~
all about my ultimate darling, Missy

its not a certain prognosis, but he thinks its kidney failure again, he is gonna contact me in a couple of days to get skitzy in for a blood test and hopefully that will tell us whether or not she has kidney problems, if not then they are gonna have to open her up and take a look at her kidneys to take a biopsy.

if this is the case i am soo not gonna be able to cope with this very well at all, am in complete panic about my other 3 now, the vet said they do not know why snakes get kidney disease but what they do know is its way more common in captive snakes than wild snakes for some reason, he said it was something to do with their enclousures people keep them in, he said hes had 3 other snakes brought in to him with kidney problems so im gonna go up to my local reptile place where i get all my rodents and equipment and ask a million and one questions. well when i say local its about a 40 min drive there but thats the closet place.

i am so gutted, so many things are going through my head now, am i doing something wrong? am i feeding them dodgy mice? are they missing something i am not supplying them? i feel so helpless, i had to watch my missy deteriate for 5 months and i really really hope i dont have to watch skitzy go throught he same thing, missy only went lasy july, i swear i still grieve for her, i cant be losing another one already! oh my goodness, i apologize for rambling on, i just dont know what to do, im panicking and im in despair, ahhhhhhhh!

what could i be doing wrong to lose such a precious girl and now another one could lose her life?
they are my complete and utter pride and joy for sure.

God missy i am so very sorry if it does turn out to be kidney disease. If theirs anything at all I can do let me know. I know it is more common in the captive envionment but to have 2 within 12 monthes of each other...

From what i know of you on here you arn't doing anything wrong at all, I am gutted for you but like i said you sound like a very responsable owner who has done nothing wrong.

Sorry again if that is the eventual prognosis, and you know where i am if you need anything.

thank you very much for your kindness cornman, not much anyone can do right now.

the vet remembers missy quite vividly, he was seeing her every two days for about 5 months so he even had got attached to her. the second he mentioned kidney disease i immediately blamed myself and the vet said that it was just a very, very unfortunate coincidence.
but yeah it really is bad that i could lose two within a short time space. damn, ive just been sitting beside her viv watching her every move praying that everything turns out well and it is just fat.
oh my, now i sound real pathetic, never mind me.
will keep you informed.

Sooooo sorry to hear that Missy!! I'm sure it's nothing you've been doing, you sound like you really love your babies! But what a coincidence, damn! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

oh my, now i sound real pathetic, never mind me.

You sound like i did 2 days ago when i lost 1 i had for 10 years. so in that case were both pathetic.
It is hard i know and it is just a coincidence if it turns out to be kidney disease. You honestly seem like a loving parent to your snake's in my opinion.

Good luck with the blood test and keep us updated.

Thanks for the update Missy, I've been thinking about you and Skitzy. I'm so sorry to hear that you might be going through the same thing as last time. If the vet thinks he's seen more with this problem, then I'd say that the previous suggestion about mice might be the way to look. It must be unusual to see a cluster like this at the same time, so if you're buying your snakes from different sources (and I think you said that Skitzy came from somewhere different than Missy?), then I'd definitely look at changing sources for the food.

I'll keep thinking of you and hoping that Skitzy can fight her way through this. If you get any more info or just need to vent, please carry on talking to us. Take care.

I really had hoped your vet wouldn't tell you that he thought it was kidney disease. I was hoping, like you were, that she is just fat.

Keep us updated. We feel for you. :(

well skitzy has an appointment now for her blood test, they only need to take a little which is good, its today at 15:15 england time.
so will post what happens then, but i should think we'd have to wait for her results, damn, now that will be the longest wait ever!

thank you for all your support.

Let us know how it goes Missy. I remember all you went thru when Missy died. I hope you have better news this time. If you find out any reasons for this problem, be sure to post it here. I'd hate to find out I was doing something that potentially could cause a problem.

Have you thought about getting another opinion from a different vet?

he is the only reptable herp vet thats anywhere near my area, when my missy was ill i did have to take her to a reptile specialist in london and he agreed with the vet so i dont actually doubt him, a couple of local reptile shops round my area use him as well so he cant be that bad. im not too sure about the enclosure thing though being a problem but all they know is that captive corns suffer more with kidney problems than wild so its got to be something to do with their enclosures or the rodents.
am off now to the vet with my skitzy, will update you all on her in a while.
:shrugs:

ok she went back to the vet and he took a blood sample from her but it takes 2 days for the results to come back and as the weekend is coming up, they dont work weekends, that makes it 4 days for me to wait, damn!!! dunno how im gonna get by waiting 4 days to find out if shes okay or not.
she had to have a bit of gas to calm her down as well, the poor thing, she was too active for the vet to take a sample.
will post an update when i hear back from the vet on monday it should be, if it takes any longer than that im gonna cry with anticipation i swear.

*now sits by the phone waiting......*

god missy thats a long time, I just hope it's good news.
Eather way i'm thinking of you and skitzy. If you need someone to sound off at, i'm willing to volunteer and listen to what you throw this direction.

I am so sorry to hear about these troubles. I know it was hard when you lost your last one. I remember reading in another post that someone was having bad luck with their snakes dying and couldn't figure out what it was. But then when they moved, they found out/figured out it was some type of pesticide or something in the apartment environment they were living in. I don't know, sometimes other environmental factors we aren't aware of might be culprits. At any rate, I know from your other posts how much you care for your snakes. Let's just pray the time goes fast for the results and they come up ok.

Oh Missy, I hope the results come back alright! That's terrible that you have to wait so long for them. I would be pulling my hair out. You and Skitzy will definitly be in my thoughts and prayers. I really hope everything works out alright... I'm so sorry you're going through all this again. :(

ahhh, am now waiting for the vet to call me back to let me know when i can go to him and get the results

*yet again waits impatiently by the phone*

Missy a prayer has gone up for both of you, i'm wairing a hole in the carpet hoping for some good news for you. I'm thinking about you.
