1 or 2

For many weeks now i have been feeding my pet snake nigel 1 mouse every sunday but he is only a baby so i dont know weather to feed him 2 at a time or not. He seems happy enough eating one a week because he sheds his skin around every month and hes always active which i think is a good sighn.

Have you been feeding it a Mouse or a Pinkie. What age is your snake, If it is old enough to take a mouse and still doesn't show a bulge I'd recommend upgrading to a small rat.. I feed Tiaga one rat every 7 days. I know the bulge is there and is what she needs to be healthy. I've had Tiaga for about 3 yrs now and was a subadult when I got her.........just to give you an idea of what others may do.........good luck!

Well nigel is under a year old and when i first started to feed him there was a bulge when i fed him pinkies but now when i feed him pinkies the bulge is slightly going down. But he is only around 20cm long so i dont know if i should upgrade him to small mice or to give him 2 pinkies.

At 20 cm, your snake is still a tiny hatchling. If 1 pinky is still leaving a small bulge, you can try 2 pinkies, but your snake may be at that "inbetween" stage where 1 isn't enough but 2 is too much. At that stage, I like to feed the 1 pinky but a bit more frequently until the snake is big enough to take 2 or a larger size. For example, if you are feeding 1 every 5 days, go to 1 every 4 days.

he must have been underfed. My cornsnake is 20 inches, and he's 5 months old.

you should be feeding around every 5 days, and I would say 2 pinkies.the rule of thumb is they rodent should be 1-1.5 times the size of your snakes girth... so, you be the judge.

Actually, that rule applied to a single prey item. If feeding multiple items, the TOTAL should be 1 to 1.5 times the width of the snake.

I don't feed multiple items myself. I find that there's really not that much difference between large pinkies and small fuzzies. The only time I feed multiple items is when I need to use some up that otherwise would get tossed.

well i fed him yesterday on sunday and i gave him 2 he ate them both once he had eaten the first 1 he was on to the second. I feed him every week should i be feeding him more frequently?

Plus i read the thing on that website that susan put up and nigel is actually growing quite fast so actually i think i should feed him every week.

If your snake is close to 1 year old and still 20 cm, it is not growing fast.... no corn of that age shoudl still be on pinks.

your on the right schedule now.

Either the snake was underfed when you bought him(or maybe you underfed him), or your wrong about his age.

cause theres no way a 1 year old cornsnake that is being properly fed is 20 inches

well, he did say its under one year. so that could mean hes three months old for all we know. more information would help :) contact the person you bought him from?

Ok first of all the man at the shop said that i should feed himonce a week with 2 pinkies and now that i think about it hes around 4-5 months old and is around 25cm approximately.(Plus the man at the shop is an expert)

Number 2 if he is 5 months old which he is now that i remember and he's 25cm (approx) then he might be growing quite fast.

Thanks for your replies...

Just curious, why you believe that the man at the shop is an expert? My reptile store guy will admit that he's not an expert when it comes to corns. He knows enough to take good care of them and I have no problem buying from him, but he doesn't call himself an expert on corns. He will declare himself a semi-expert on Iguanas though :) They are his babies and he no longer sells them because too many folks won't take his advice about the care of them.

well hes sort of an expert but not like a proper expert he just knows a lot about snakes, spiders and monkeys - did i mention hes got a monkey like the oneof aladin -. Plus i only 11 how was i gonna know if he was a proper expert or not.

When your snake has grown a bit bigger and the 2 pinkies don't leave a feeding lump it'll be time to give a peach fuzzy instead. (A mouse that's just started growing its fur)

Nigel,

Your age was one of the reasons, I asked. Even adults tend to take the advice of a petshop owner, much to the poor snake's disadvantage as gospel. I don't know your petshop owner and he may be awesome. I just wanted to point out that he may not be such an expert and to make sure to do your ..........groan.........homework. :) At least researching snakes, like you are here, is more fun than English or math... at least it would be for me :D

yer ok thanks for the advice - by the way im not being sarcastic - and i definately agree researching snakes is much better than maths or english.

Well, a snake of that age being 25 cm does not say much if you don't know how long it was out of the egg, since they can be 25 cm out off the egg... usually they are about 20 cm though, not sure if growing 5 cm in 4-5 is much, i think mine grew fatser but I'm a pretty heavy feeder with hatchlings.

ok here are the final measurements i measures the last snake skin that he shed and it measured approximately 37cm so my estimate of 25cm was completely wrong so like the person said earlier ( sorry i cant remember your name many appologies ) some snakes are born at around 20-25 cm so if thats the case nigel could of grown over the last 4-5 months an approximate length of 17-12 cm now can someone please tell me if he is healthy or not?

many thanks again...

well... he still could be 25 cm. sheds stretch... alot ( up to %30)

length to age ratio isnt a very good measure of how healthy your snake is.

however I think its fair to say that your snake has been underfed at somepoint in its life, cause my cornsnake is the same age as yours (5 months) and hes 48 cm

he can still be healthy, but... i dunno. As long as your on the right feeding schedule now, it'll be fine
