I've posted some goofy threads but I think of this every year. It is a story that has guided more than one person's life path and is a clear example of what Christmas should be.
In the mid eighties a grandma of 8 came home from a Christmas Eve church service with all 8 of her grandkids. They lived with her because their parents were either in jail, on drugs, or nowhere to be found. She was doing the best she could. But this night she came home to find nothing. I mean some punks had broken into her house and stolen everything. The Christmas tree, the kids presents, their clothes, toys, food in the house everything!
When LE arrived they apologized but informed her this was common during this time of the year. Burglars break in, clean a place out, move on to the next town. They explained there was little they could do but would inform the towns down the line and maybe their stuff would turn up.
This was unacceptable to one of the kids. She was critical of the officers and told them they just wanted to get home to their safe and sound homes and didn't want to deal with her grandma and her brothers and sisters.
A few hours later there was a knock at the door. Here were the officers... one had presents, for each kid. One had a tree with all the trimmings. In tow were their wives. One with clothes for the kids for church. The other had Christmas dinner with all the trimmings.
And that little girl who was so critical, became the Chief of Police of Fulton County.
That's Christmas to me (should be all year really).
And if any youngsters are thinking about a career in criminal justice, this is why you should do it.
