A Couple Interesting Q's

lumene

rebuilding my life
I am wondering because my hatchie is still MIA.

Question 1.

What is a corn snakes' range of smell? How far away can they smell prey?
I have been leaving pinkies ou but have no absolute proof my Bug is eating them (my cat will eat them if left where he can get them)

Question 2.

How flat can a hatchling corn get? I need to verify that he hasn't escaped into the apartment building (my paranoia that he is out of my apartment has been mounting). His last weigh in was 14g... In October when he wen missing... :(

Needing some experts in here!

Thanks in adance.

Yeah I know they can get in some tiny places... I need to know though before I go banging on neighbours' doors... the front door is not quite flush to the floor but I didn't see it as a problem until I actually brought hatchlings home.

I conducted a test with Bug's cousin Rosette whom I own, she managed to get her head inder the door but backed out.

The hallway in my building is always heated so I have to wonder if he went there for warmth and possibly got picked up by another tenant...

My ca and ferret haven't found him, thats about the only good news I have.

:'( thats not good for me, it makes me in violation of the lease if my snakes escape.

On the upside though, I doubt he left the 4th floor without human assistance. We have steel fire doors dividing the building. Those doors Are flush to the floor...

unfortunately, if they can fit their head under the door, the whole body can follow. I sure hope you find him :(

:( I will keep hoping then, and I will ask my neighbours and landlords and just hope I can smooth the wrinkles. He is only a hatchling, not a 6' boa after all.

Can anyone answer question #1?

I'm wondering the same thing about how far snake's can smell. Lumene, have you tried dragging an F/T mouse through the house/building creating a trail?

I think it depends on the size of the room and how smelly the thing is they are looking for. For example... mine can always tell when its feeding day about 20 minutes after putting the mice to warm. The 'little' ones are in my kitchen so about 14 x 14 feet. otherwise, what they are smelling is the urine trail a mouse would leave behind. (wild snake) so for that? maybe a couple feet? I think it just comes down to the strength of the smell.

Have you put up signs in your building, just in case?
I would put a few up, just to say that if somebody finds him, please don't freak out and hurt him because he's harmless. Just put a jar over him and call you.
Also, no clue how far corn snakes can smell. I'm guessing a pretty decent range, though. I have one snake that reacts to the pinky once it's about 16 feet away from her (length of the room). They usually seem to sense smell better up close, though. :(

I really, really hope you find him.

Fliers is definitely my next step! :)

I hope someone picked him up. Most of the people in the complex are nice, but we have some stupid college age people right below me.

I just want him home. He was a free baby from a friend that I waited two years for. I brought him home at 33 days old.
