While we were moving the basement herp room around today to accomodate the new racks and cages and Tara's snakes and two lizards, we found Adelina, our adult African housensnake, dead in her favorite hide. She had one regurge two weeks ago after feeding well and normally every other week prior to that. This coincided with a temp spike on an exceedingly hot day, so I figured it was the excessive heat and removed her heat lamp which I had on her tank all winter for extra heat. I changed her water Wednesday and she poked her head out of the hide to see me. On Thursday and Friday she was curled in her hide, and we did not bother her because this is normal behavior for her. Then today we found her dead.
I don't have much background on her, other than the lady I got her from had her as an adult for three years and purchased her from someone who had her as an adult for several years, as well, and had been told that she was wild caught.
I am incredibly saddened by her loss. She was an amazing and gentle snake, in addition to being gorgeous and friendly. She was one of my best ambassador snakes and has been handled by most of the science students at my high school over the course of this year. Everyone loved her. She was an amazing lady.
Here are some pictures. RIP Adelina, my lovely girl.
