A terrible loss...

While we were moving the basement herp room around today to accomodate the new racks and cages and Tara's snakes and two lizards, we found Adelina, our adult African housensnake, dead in her favorite hide. She had one regurge two weeks ago after feeding well and normally every other week prior to that. This coincided with a temp spike on an exceedingly hot day, so I figured it was the excessive heat and removed her heat lamp which I had on her tank all winter for extra heat. I changed her water Wednesday and she poked her head out of the hide to see me. On Thursday and Friday she was curled in her hide, and we did not bother her because this is normal behavior for her. Then today we found her dead.

I don't have much background on her, other than the lady I got her from had her as an adult for three years and purchased her from someone who had her as an adult for several years, as well, and had been told that she was wild caught.

I am incredibly saddened by her loss. She was an amazing and gentle snake, in addition to being gorgeous and friendly. She was one of my best ambassador snakes and has been handled by most of the science students at my high school over the course of this year. Everyone loved her. She was an amazing lady.

Here are some pictures. RIP Adelina, my lovely girl.

Thank you guys. I need to get her 30 gallon cage scrubbed out, and one of our others moved into it... it hurts seeing it empty. She was going to be moving into a 4' x 2' glass front AP cage... she would have loved the space. This is the first adult snake I've lost. I've lost hatchlings before that have failed to thrive, and one to crypt (my first) but never an adult... it's not fun. Thanks so much for the support.

I'm sorry for your loss. She was a gorgous snake. By the sound of it she was possibly a pretty old snake. Atleast she got to live her life to the fullest and help other people learn snakes are not scarey monsters along the way. I hope you feel better.

What a shock! I'm so sorry. It does seem like she may have lived a long life and was very happy in your care. I'm glad she made a difference in people's lives. RIP beautiful girl.

I saw the title of this thread and said "Oh no...not Bumblebee"....

I am SO sorry you lost this lovely girl. She was amazing. Here's hoping Bumblebee turns up safe and sound.

I'm sorry to see this, Lauren.

I don't know if you want another house snake, but we have in a BUNCH of them right now. Several different color phases. They probably won't make great "ambassador" snakes like your guy, but I wanted to let you know in case you are interested.

I may take you up on that. I just said to Tara that I want to get another. I love their look... right down to the "alien eyes." Are you vending at any shows locally anytime soon?

So sorry for your loss. It's always harder when it's sudden and unexpected. At least her time with you enriched the lives of everyone.

We have no shows until Hamburg on June 13 (I don't think we are doing the June HdG, although I may go if I need mice).

We have some olive colored ones, and some dark colored ones. They are WC, and many are nippy, which is why I was saying they aren't "ambassadors".

If you want to pursue it, let me know.
