It appears that FaunaClassifieds is under a DDOS attack, likely from one of the bad guys outed on the Board of Inquiry. The source is just a guess on my part, but I think an educated guess.

If any of you have been keeping up on DDOS attacks, (and I admit that I haven't) then you realize this is pretty serious. Right now I just don't know what is going to happen. I've contacted the FBI Internet Crimes Division and have been corresponding with some pretty high powered DDOS mitigation teams to see if they can track down the source. I have no idea of the time frame that will be involved.

I'll let you all know more when I know more.....

trying to figure out what to do

hello Rich!!! :bowdown: at first, a couple days ago fauna was just real slow for me...now I cant get in there at all. and the same time this happend I also cant connect to 3 of my sites. I tried everything I could think of and finally just rebooted my PC. guess what, still cant log into 3 of my sites or fauna

Going Crazy trying to figure out what to do :rofl:
 
over 900 emails

also when this happened. over 900 emails I had stored on my hotmail account were sent to my pop server...some I had seen before some I hadnt.
I am running norton 360 but it didnt seem to help with this attack
I ran full scans to no avail...
 
Thanks for posting this, Rich. I was wondering what happened and was a bit concerned when it wasn't solved within 24 hours. I'm sorry to hear that someone would do this and I hope all can be resolved quickly and safely.

What are those three other sites you are having problems getting to?
 
So someone is deliberately causing websites to malfunction?

Any specific ones? Or random ones?
 
Uh... so someone tried to hack fauna? (Wait, that's illegal?)
I can think of a couple suspicious names that could've done it, though...
 
Thanks for the heads up Rich. My net connection is so flakey at first I thought it was just me who couldn't get in.......it flakes out pretty often.....but after a full day of it flaking out EVERY time on fauna and only sometimes on other sites I pretty much figured out it wasn't just my connection.

Hope you can figure out who hacked it and what to do next. Sorry you gotta deal with such as this.

FaunaClassifieds is up and running on the new server and the techs are trying tricks to mitigate the DDoS attack. I've got some other guns lined up if they falter. The site is REAL SLOW because of the attack, but at least it is still alive.

I'm considering some contingency plans if things don't improve within the next week or so. I can resurrect HerpWantAds.com, or any of a number of other domain names I have and just move the entire site. Yeah, this will be a problem with a lot of broken links, but I think the target here is to shut down the BOI. I won't allow that to happen. Even if I have to move it to a new domain name every week, that data and evidence of the bad guys there will remain, come hell or high water. Heck, I might just move the BOI to it's own domain, since I do have that BoardOfInquiry.com website that isn't really doing much.

There are also some server hosting services that specialize in high risk websites that have exceptional tools available to defeat these sorts of attacks. And there are people out there who have gotten burned by DDoS attacks themselves who have made a business out of going after these creeps and dismantling their illicit networks of robot attack servers. So-called BotNets.

So hey, things were getting boring for me over on FaunaClassifieds. I think I needed this to get me mad enough to build back my resolve for that site. To be honest, I was in a real funk about everything and not far from selling off the site and being done with it. But if it is so important to someone to try to shut it down like this, then I'll be DAMNED if I will allow that to happen.

It will cost me some bucks, but heck, I need the tax deductions anyway. THIS is worth fighting over. I guess those creeps forgot that I BUILT the Board of Inquiry because someone got me angry enough to do it.

I'm talking with a guy who specializes in this sort of stuff. Looks like I'm going to be moving FaunaClassifieds into his hardened network, maybe beginning tonight. Looks like the server host I just moved to has null routed the domain, which pretty much means they have given up.

Hmm, haven't even touched the Excedrin bottle. A year ago I would have been popping valiums. :rofl:

Glad your not having to pop the pain pills. ~ new hardened network huh? Sounds complicated. Thanks for taking care of it. Let us (the user base that have shown up here to see whats up) know if we need to do anything to help out
 
Yeah, if you want to get really edjumacated about this stuff, look up DDoS and see what those really are. This is really cyberterrorism. There is actually a war going on, and some people tap into that to direct attacks towards competing websites and sites that just piss them off. There is also a lot of extortion going on where the people running these botnets will attack banks and high profile/high dollar sites then extort money from them to stop the attack.

And as best I can tell, no one is really lifting a finger to do anything about it. So this sort of thing is increasing dramatically because of the lack or repercussions. But I did find a group of guys at stopddos.org who are claiming that they CAN assist in tracking down the culprits and assisting with prosecutions. So maybe things can be turned around.

I've wondered why there are so many domain names that have been apparently abandoned then taken over by generic advertising pages. I think this may be the answer to that......

In any event, I have the data for FaunaClassifieds safely stored. I can rebuild the site under a different domain name and broadcast a "here we are" message to all members, if it gets to that point. So I've got lots of options yet..... If someone is trying to kill the BOI, they are in for a lot of work in order to do so.

as far as me getting really edjumacted.....well.....thats just not going to happen! LOL! I'm just not that smart. I wash dishes and do laundry.....scoop snake poop and wash rat pans...............I do happen to know someone who might know a little about it though.....or at least his most recent degree claims as much. I'll show this to Scott (my husband) tonight and see if he knows anything about "DDoS" and see what he says. If he knows anything I'll have him PM you from here. I don't know if he'll be able to help or not~ I'm not kidding when I say I'm just not smart enough to understand this stuff.....but I'll ask if he can help at all.
 
Well, I found a guy who seems to be an expert on this DDoS stuff. So I hired him, gave him the keys to the server and said "have at it". No, the guy turned out to NOT be an expert. He's a frickin' magician! Within 10 minutes he had the site back up and FLYING like nothing had ever happened.

To say I am impressed is a wicked understatement.............

So FaunaClassifieds is back up. That doesn't mean the black hats won't try a different approach, but I've got Merlin the Magician on my side now. :punch:

That's news to me. It's been up solidly for the last few days now. Anyone else seeing this? Certainly someone would have posted about this over on FaunaClassifieds if that were the case.
 
It just happenned not 10 seconds ago...I clicked a few links, and all of a sudden after clicking about 4 different ones, I get a page not found error. Doesn't matter what computer I'm on. I'll go back and visit again later, and the same thing will happen.
