African House Snakes - any special appeal?

Been considering yet another snake and during the various readings on the 'net I have seen many references to African House Snakes as having "personality", "bundle of fun", et al. (I think most of this bravado comes from folks that have bred AH Snakes - to sell...)

The AHS I recall looking over at the various snake shows seemed pretty - no offense intended - blah looking when compared to many superbly colorful corn morphs out here.

Does anyone have both an AHS and a corn that can give me/us a nose-to-tail comparo as to why AHS owners hold these in such high regard. Such as this "personality thing" - what are they talking about?

Thanks!

I had one in my shop for a while. I rather liked it, but never considered getting into them as a breeding project. It was as docile as a young corn its' age would be, but had a more kingsnake-like feeding response. Babies are tiny, like a lavender corn, and are probably going to need *new* born pinks (reds). Not much experience outside of that, they seem to like it warm, I noticed.

I have both, although I haven't had the House snakes long. Over all I really like them so far but can't say that they have more 'personality' than a corn. So far I've found them pretty comparable to the corns.

Thanks for the input! I wondered about the "personality" and "tons of fun" thing that was mentioned in reference to these. Thought maybe they were bitey or flighty or just "showy" - as opposed to my corn.

May have to look at these closer at the next show.

I love my house snakes! Always thought they were a bit underrated. No, they don't come in the dozens of colors that corns do, but they have over a dozen subspecies all with their own interesting qualities. They're fairly inexpensive, stay a reasonable size, and are pretty docile.

We keep a decent collection of AHS's and I LOVE them, there are new morphs and combos, we have 9 of them and I would only consider 2 of them to be "blah" they are almost irridescent (sp) and quite beautiful IMO

I keep considering getting one. Since I haven't had one, I can't comment on personality, but I will say that I love their cat eyes and the stripe that goes across their eyes. They seem really iridescent too.

Seriously, who couldn't love their cute little faces?

Beautiful T- Tavia! We have a pair of those guys as well, there aren't too many in albinos Canada yet and I have yet to find T+ Albino...but I'm on the hunt so if anyone knows of where to find some PLEASE share :) I do have the ability to import from anywhere in the US or UK/Germany.

This girl is a little different, we have a 1.3 of these, they are a Striped House Snake and are actually a separate species

Oh wow! Where did you get your stripes?

On a side note, I've been trying to track down lamprophis aurora at a reasonable price for ages.

Very nice stripe! I love those too but have only seen them offered a few times.
I'm hoping my pair will be ready to breed by next year, have a male normal het albino and the girl I posted.

I have an importer who I give my list to and he does my "shopping" for the harder to find stuff, I didn't order these but he saw them on a list and brought them in for me and told me once he had ordered them that he was getting in something special for me. So I can't honestly tell you where they came from.
The Aurora's are incredible looking, I would love some Abyssinian's but I'm certain they will be near impossible to find and if/once I do I will be into them for a pretty penny as well:eek1:

Our Albino pair is big enough to breed, but I didn't pair them enough and he didn't get much of a break between her and our other big girl, she's a 500+ gram normal who gave us 17 eggs first go! Her second clutch should be dropped any day now. The albino female laid 12 slugs just over a week ago, I was bummed but not discouraged :) I will pair them again once he is out of shed and she has had her post lay and a few good meals.

These look a lot nicer than the bland dark brown ones the vendor had at the last show. He said they breed so often/easily/readily that they sell the many surplus babies they have off to monitor owners as food.
