Hello all, I don't have a current health problem with my snake but I have questions regarding the anatomy and figured this might be a good place for them...
I am just trying to better understand what the cloaca consists of. When probing a snake, what exactly is the probe going into? If it is a male, are the hemipenes inside out, so to speak, inside the snake? Or is the probe running along side of one of the hemipenes??
For a female snake, sinnce there are no hemipenes what do you call the organ that takes place of a vagina? It is my understanding that snakes do not have "vaginas", but is there a name for the pockets other than just referring to it as the cloaca since the cloaca seems to contain the anus and scent glands as well?
And is the anus directly behind (towards the snake's head) the sex organs inside of the cloaca?
And what about scent glands? For the snakes who have them (such as corn snakes) where are these located in relation to the anus, hemipenes, and cloaca?
By the way, does anyone know what snakes have scnet glands? Like, is it only colubrids? I don't think ball pythons have them for example, but then again I'm not sure of this...
Thanks for anyone who can clear up the anatomy confusion for me!
