Anyone here know anything about rocks?

While digging through boxes in storage, I came across a pill bottle filled with small rocks. I vaguely remember it from my youth... something my step-dad at the time had found in a vacant appartment (he was a repair guy for a large apartment complex... people would move out and leave things behind all the time... I once acquired a 30 gallon tank full of guppies this way). Anyways, it was given to me because I was into rocks. Never got it ID'd, just kept in with my collection pretending it was from mars or some bull like that. Haha.

So, I found it today and am looking at these rocks. They're dark and rough, with a slight metallic sheen in the worn spots. They're all smallish, ranging from 1-3 cm in diameter I suppose. When you hold them up to the light, however, it becomes apparent that these seemingly rather opaque rocks are actually quite transparent... and red.

Not all are red... some are a really dark blackish red, and some of the larger ones are more of a paler, purpley-golden tone, like the last one pictured.

Hmmmm. Now I'm wondering what the heck they are! Maybe they're garnet or a type of quartz or somethin.

Hehehehehe....

Neeeeerd!

What you need to do is find a "rock hound" to help you in identifying those crystals. Many a precious or semi-precious stone look like an ordinary rock until you polish and cut them. My parents were into that years ago but have long since forgotten much of it. You may be lucky and have a local club you can take them to and get multiple opinions at once.
