Aquarium lip?

Does anyone know why aquarium manufacturers put that small quarter inch lip around the top interior of the aquariums. You know, the one that baby snakes always find and then circle around the top of the aquarium endlessly.

Recently one of my subadults managed to get up there and damaged one of his scales. It repaired itself after a shed or two, but I'd like to prevent it from happening again. Do you think a bead of aquarium silicon would do the trick? Removing the lip does not seem to be a viable option.

Oh, that's a very good idea. I see Sears sells 3/8 inch weatherstrip tape. That would work perfectly. Thanks.

I got thin weatherstripping, probably not 1/2 wide, 2 huge rolls at walmart for under $3.

I had to do the outside of my aquarium top so the screen cover fit tight, it was perfect. I bet that would be good inside as well. Good idea! My baby gets up there a lot. I'll see about that tomorrow, I sure have enough of it!

I picked up some at Home Depot this morning. 3/8 wide X 3/16 tall X 17 ft. It worked perfectly and was enough to do two tanks with some left over.

One thing to consider with weather stripping. If it is the stick-on type, I would not put it past a snake to get stuck on it.
