Aspen alternative

Butter Motley

butter motleyc
I have a butter motley and i love to pamper him, but I'm pretty sure I'm allergic to the aspen bedding. Is there a high quality bedding replacement that is corn friendly? Thanks

There are the coconut fiber products (like Eco-earth) or Reptibark, both of which will hold more humidity- just something to keep in mind. Reptibark can be a bit dusty. Carefresh might be a good option for you.

Obviously you need humidity (30-60% being the comfortable range), some substrates retain moisture longer than others, that's all. Too much humidity isn't good (substrate may grow mold or your snake could get a respiratory infection). Say if you were to mist your snakes tank- the humidity would stay higher for longer with Reptibark than for Aspen.

I've used carefresh before and I really like it. Right now I use aspen in a few bins, paper towels for the hatchlings, and carefresh for the rest.

I'm using Kaytee's Clean and Cozy for a couple of mine, they seem to like it. It's easy for them to burrow in and it's absorbent.

It's soft and very lightweight (not heavy and chunky like the Carefresh) though, and eventually I find pieces of it all over the house. The same was true of the aspen, but the aspen was pointy and sharp, where the Kaytee stuff is basically shredded paper towel.

It's not perfect, but it works for me for now. I don't mist or provide a humid hide and don't have a problem with humidity.

JM2cents - I found the giant 50L bag of the white Carefresh odor-absorbing bedding on sale at Petsmart and now use a blend of CF and Zoo-Med Shredded Aspen for my snakes.

A couple of Falsey poo's made me try the CF... You'da thought he lived on cabbage and fish heads...

My amel is on ecco earth and I like it a lot. My adult snow is on carefresh and that is nice as well. You just can't really mist the carefresh so I will have to see how her next shed goes.

Why do you think he's allergic to the aspen?

The OP is allergic hun, not the snake.

I use carefresh for some of my snakes and really like it. It's easy to clean, nice smelling and comes in all kinds of colors.

ETA - Should add that I found the Carefresh to be overly dusty as compared to the aspen. Once the CF is gone, it's back to just the aspen alone.

I thought of the cocoa and jungle floor chips combo, but the corn enjoys tunneling thru the "fluffier" substrates, so I may likely stick with those for the corn.

Carefresh, any type is ok for corns? I'd love some fun colors of bedding

Colors - no issue. My friend uses the halloween orange and powder blue for his white albino boa and white BP.
