Baby Corn Died :(

Hello all,

I got a baby corn mid November. He seemed to be doing alright in his home. Just was terrified of me. But i gave him time to get used to his home. I didnt handle him too much. I fed him a pinkie every 5-7 days, and he seemed to be doing alright.... he shedded once since I had him as well. His cage was clean, always had fresh water... prob temperature... however i left him with a friend, bc I had to go away for a bit.

11 days later, I got a call that he was dead, and there was this weird green spot on him. Kinda curious if you guys knew what could caused it. an infection maybe. I feel Terrible about the snakes death, even guilty.. dont think I wanna get another one. :(

here is the pic of him that my friend took, with the weird spot...

The green spot is the contents of the gall bladder leaking out after death, it's a normal process and nothing to do with why your snake died. Sorry for your loss

Sorry to hear that you lost your young cornsnake. Unfortunately, some times these things happen for no rhyme, nor reason. Of course, because you were gone for 11 days you have even less idea what was going on... were his temps just right or did they get too cold? too hot? Was he still eating okay for your friend or had he refused? Was his water kept clean and filled while you were gone? Just so many things could have happened or perhaps it was something internal that would have showed up anyway.

I hope once the pain eases up, you'll get another one. They really are neat pets.

Sorry for your loss!

Except for putting it in the fridge, not giving water, very rude handling or violence (which all I assume your friend did not) I don't think anything wrong in husbandry kills a corn within 11 days. It probably just had a defect that would have shown up anyway.

I hope the death of your corn does not put you off buying another one. I am in the same boat as you. I only had my young corn (4-5 months old) for 5 weeks and he was very active right up until he died on December 25th. I was having a problem with him regurgitating his food and was treating the regurgs as being too low of temps, which I figured was possibily due to living in the basement, which is naturally cooler in the winter months. He had the same green tint on his belly, but it was located closer to the vent.

Just give yourself time, I felt horrible too about my corns death and after some consideration I decided that I would wait a while and then buy another one. I have in the mean time ordered Kathy Loves Corn Snake manual and it should be here any day now. Good luck

I too am sorry to hear about your loss.

Trust me, I know how you feel. I lost my first corn on January 1st of this year after having him for less than 35 days.

Fortunately the fire hasn't died and I am in the process of getting a new one. I'm looking forward to my new arrival perhaps even a little more than my first :)

Regards,
Steve

Sorry for your loss, unfortunately with the little ones they can die for mysterious reasons. sometimes they just have a genetic defect or something that you can not see or diagnose in time. and with them being so tiny, it's hard to treat them. :shrugs:

i just lost my baby western hoggy.....he was a problem feeder...but he finally ate a couple meals with no regurge so i thought he was going to be ok, then all of a sudden he started to look very skinny. he'd eat and eat and not put on any weight, i thought maybe he had parasites, we ran a fecal on him, nothing! a couple days later, i found him dead. he was a tiny little thing too. not sure what got him. his temps and everything were good.

Don't get discouraged from getting another corn. Although I probably would not get another from the same place....

i lost my baby corn last thursday 4th. i was worried sick about him last wednesday as he had the green seethrough patches on him and he was not moving to much. he was given a clean bill of health and was dead the next day. he had to be sent away to see why he'd died as he'd been in contact with 3 other corns in the pet shop but he died of a heart attack.im still very upset about losing him now. ive got a new baby a crimson who we should be able to bring home in afew weeks. but im afraid of the same thing happening again. hopefully your loss wont put you of getting another corn. i saw my new baby yesterday for the first time as my husband picked him on saturday. he melted my heart and i cant wait to get him.

that is really sad i hate it when i see a picture of a dead snake it just makes me feel aufull.
It would help if you knew when it started to show up cos maybe your friend saw it and just ignored it instead of taking it to the vets
