BAD Trojan Virus Scare

PHEW!!!! I just finally fixed my laptop! At about 6pm tonight i get a message that says: your pc is infected! So after running Norton and all my spyware killers, all of which found nothing, except it kept popping up: your pc is infected! I even ran the virus scan at www.trendmicro.com, which found it plus 2 others and spyware that nothing else found, but it still couldnt get rid of the bad trojan...

Something like this happened in november and I had to reformat and lost almost everything!!!!!!!

So I resorted to doing a system restore, and luckly i had one from Monday. And luckly it worked and now there is no more virus. I'm so happy I could cry! I didnt want to have to reformat and reinstall everything again.

Well, thats all folks, just had to tell someone what i had to go through tonight.

The best way to stay "safe" is by not getting infected in the first place. I've run dozens and dozens of programs, and the best one's i've found so far are the following. I've been running the combination of these for 2+ years, and hardly ever even get spyware on my computer, let alone viruses. BTW, these are all FREE programs, so you can save your cash for more important things, like corns....

Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE
Spywareblaster
Microsoft Anti-spyware
Spybot Search and Destroy.

The first two are my primary's, and catch everything, even ones that the Microsoft one doesn't.

As far as Virus protection, I use AVG Free, and that catches more than Norton ever has, and uses less of your memory to run it.

BTW, 99% of the time a virus is introduce via opening an attachment through your email, so I would reccommend NEVER opening ANY attachments, unless you know who sent it, and you know that they were planning on sending it. One of the easiest way's for viruses to spread is by infecting your email, and sending itself to all the people in your address book, so you could get them from people you know. I'd reccomend using a 3rd party email, like yahoo or hotmail to be better protected.

Also, make sure your firewall is on, and use a router that has a secondary firewall built in. You can always open certain ports if necessary.

Oh yeah, and stay away from Porn sites, you dirty pervs.

LOL!

I have ad-aware 6 and SE, but i prefer using 6. I dunno, it worked better for me than SE, but still neither cought any spyware when I scanned yesterday but trendmicro.com caught what they didnt.

I have no Idea what it could have been from, but who knows. All i care is that its gone and I dont have to worry for now.

Ill look into the other programs, cause Norton is crap! It will tell you that there is a virus, but that it cant get rid of it and the directions for a manual remove dont do anyhting either.

Thanks.

Yeah, the first things that viruses look for are ways to shut down the most popular anti-virus programs, starting with norton. So usually by the time your infected, you can't remove it because the software that takes care of it no longer works correctly. I had the same thing about 3 years ago.

I have always had problems with norton to the point that I can't stand to even hear the name anymore. I currently use McAfee now and haven't had a problem in the last 5 years of using it. I have had numerous viruses on my laptop and as long as McAfee has been up to date, have never had a problem in cleaning the files. Most of the time, McAfee will catch the virus before it has time to execute.

I use SpyBot and Adware to keep the spy and ad programs at bay, but haven't tried the rest that have been talked about here. might have to look into them.
