Beautiful king snake being abused...

There is a local pet shop in my area which carries reptiles and fish, and I usually buy my pinkies there, but I will not any longer. They have a beautiful California King Snake, it is a cool morph but I am terrible with the names of them. It is mostly white and has broken black stripes.
Basically, the snake looks to be almost twice the size of my baby corn, is in a 5 gallon tank with no hide, just substrate and a water bowl, and has a giant heat lamp over the MIDDLE of this tiny tank. Needless to say when I was there the snake was frantically trying to escape.
Unfortunately at this time I can only invest in one snake... my baby monty just happens to be it. But I feel so terrible for this king! I am almost considering buying it, even though I don't nearly have enough time or resources to devote to another snake.
It makes me so angry that animals have to suffer in such a way. I tried speaking to the shopkeeper about it but he wouldn't have any of it. Claims his son is an "expert" and knows what he's doing.
Its infuriating, and just sad.

I know it pulls at your heartstrings to see an animal being mistreated in a pet store, but buying the animal only makes it worse. The pet store owner only sees it in terms of profits, and if he's making sales then he's going to keep doing what he's doing.

I hadn't even thought of it like that. :awcrap:
I was more thinking just get the poor thing as comfortable as possible. I mean it looked healthy besides being frantic, so I'm just afraid it will die a long slow and miserable death.

Can't you take a picture of the animal and its "home" and report them to the better business bureau? Maybe that will help the problem, if not try to atleast point out the issue to the manager. They may not know exactly what each animal needs and my make an effort to fix the issues.
