Bedding Choices...

I am planning to begin a new vivarium in the coming weeks, but am going over a lot of options. I am not sure what I am using, but I plan to utilize something less conventional and adapt it to my needs (recycling). I am pretty much decided on a handfull of things, but I am unsure about my choice of bedding.

I have been told not to use calcium sand, as it can cause irritation and the snakes dont need it, but the local retile shop carries a "snake friendly" calcium sand which I like which is competely smooth, unlike the kind I used to use for my Basilisk years ago. Is this a viable option? I know Corn's arn't desert snakes so would be going this route for aestetics.

My other choice would be a larger mulch like bedding, non-aspen. I like the look of this, and think it would give Moe a better home then cheap apsen. So long as the reptile mulch is not cypress, would this be an acceptable option too?

Thanks for everyones input, I want to give Moe a good place to live.

I've heard nothing but negitives about sand, and always ignore packaging...i've seen 'pine and ceder chips special gerbil blend' which is pretty much poison, so just because something says 'snake friendly' doesnt really mean it would be. I've also heard nothing but good things of aspen, and it seems as if its a popular choice around here. Personally i use a coconut husk repti bark...theres alot of discussions about substrate. I think if its something that the snake can burrow into and wont cause any health issues, the snake will be a happy camper.

If you were talking about recycled bedding, there was a great thred not too long ago about someone who just got a paper shredder...may be worth a look.

No, I meant I was recylcing something into my vivarium. I want the substraite and the stuff in the tank to be decorative while still purposfull.
