Black light question

New member
I was in Wal Mart the other day and I saw a black light for reptiles and a black light for people's use. Both looked exactly the same. The only difference I did see was the price. The reptile bulb cost a lot more. So, if regular black lights are dangerous to use for snakes.... then how can I feel safe using the one for reptiles when they look identical? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Leave it to me to ask odd questions. Thankx in advance.

The usual difference in the two is that the typical black light bulb is actually a black light blue. These are generally used for parties, viewing things like posters etc. They can cause eye damage over time. The bulbs for reptile use are a different kind. The problem that I found with using these was the very short time that they lasted. They are kind of expensive and I didn't feel they were a good buy. The red night time bulbs last longer and are less expensive. I don't know what size or type of enclosure you are trying to heat but if you can use a lower wattage bulb the red ones you can buy for regular household use work fine. They cost less too:D

Thanks so much Alicia. I just want to use 40 watts. I'll check out that red one you mentioned. I'll let you know how things work out.
