Bleach for cage

Would I be able to use the 1 part bleach 3 part water solution with colorox mountain fresh bleach? my concern is the mountain fresh kind would not be good for the snake.

When cleaning out a cage with bleach, rinsing out with fresh water and waiting until the smell of bleach is gone is the important part I think.

Just a tip. If you accidentally add too much bleach, ever, use of an aquarium dechlorinator in your rinse water can help to get rid of the bleach smell and detoxify any remaining residue. :)

Actually, a solution of 1 part bleach to 9 parts water is sufficient for cleaning. That's what we use at the vet hospital I work at, and even that is too concentrated.

oh ok - that sounds a lot more realistic because otherwise I was worried that the smell/scent would bother my snake. Ill probably just put a real small amount like half a cap full in a solution and then Ill make sure to throroughly rinse it out and let it dry before returning the snake.

I'd ditch the bleach and get some chlorhexidine:

It's sort of expensive, but you dilute it down and it only takes 2 tbsp to make a gallon of cleaner. So it'll last you forever.

The problem with bleach is that if you don't adequately rinse it then it can potentially cause health issues for your animal.

I got some when I ordered my new thermostat for the new baby (orr will when the thermostats get here). It sounds like it will be alot less hassle than the bleach :)

Well, I get reactions to bleach and other chemicals, so I use good ol' vinegar. The glass is nice and shiny and makes you want pickles! Plus, the smell leaves a lot faster than bleach. Just don't mix vinegar with bleach or you will produce chlorine gas, and that's no fun for anybody!

Um, isn't that ammonia and bleach that makes chlorine gas?

Any acids, basically. Ammonia and bleach give a much stronger chlorine gas, but either way, I wouldn't mix vinegar with bleach anyways. Vinegar does neutralise bleach, though (say if you clean your tank with bleach you can wipe some vinegar over it afterwards to get rid if the smell.) I've heard of bleach and vinegar recipes but I don't trust them! I'm really nervous with chemicals.
