Breeding?

Hey guys, its been 4 months since Ive owned Damien now, and hes about 2, i'm thinking of breeding him, the local reptile store Incubates the eggs for people, so yea, but i'm wondering what i do? like i will have to get Damien sexed and then get another snake "not a problem" but then what? please help : )

he he i was trying, but... you know the on-line guides, there all complicated :/ "talking about the kinds and all that" all confuses me lol, and this brumtation is it called? not sure but yea lol, thought maybe someone could put it simple for me =/

I would recomend holding off on breeding until you've gained a bit more experience. I've owned my snakes for almost two years now, and even now am not sure if I'm quite ready to dive into breeding. There is so much to learn about these creatures...and much needs to be learned first hand. 4 months isn't nearly enough time.

If the guides are too confusing, then now is not the time to be breeding. Buy a book or two. Read, study, learn. Get yourself to a point where you can read ANY of those on-line guides, and have them make perfect sense to you.

These are lives you'd be taking into your own hands. That's a responsibility not to be taking lightly. Don't do it until your ready.

The earliest you could breed (responsibly) would be a year from now. Take until the end of the summer to read every book about cornsnakes, read every thread on this forum that has anything to do with breeding/incubation/hatchling care, figure out how much money you're going to need for the whole process, and then decide in the fall if you're ready to breed or not. While you're reading, stop to look up every word you don't know, so it makes sense.

Remember, 99% of research is finding your own answers. Only 1% is asking questions. If you're going to breed, you have to be able to figure these things out for yourself.

IMO, George, having someone "tell you simply" what is needed to breed snakes is not really going to prepare you to do it. If you look for, and find, the answers you need, you will spend alot of time actually THINKING abut what goes in to successful breedings, instead of just reading an outline of how to do it. There is alot more to it than simply allowing a boy and a girl hangout at the right time. If researching and finding the answers yourself is too complicated or time-consuming, breeding and hatching offspring will be as well...

That's not to say you shouldn't think about doing it. That only means that thinking about it, learning about it, researching it, and preparing for it NOW will help you to be ready for it when Damien is ready for it, and you can be more assured of success...

I have the first three...and I read them all the time. Fantastic set of resources. There are still a few I REALLY want to get, though...

NO, snakes is not like breeding hamsters. For one hamsters are relatively easy to care for as babies, they have thier mothers to look after them, snakes don't. You have to be sure you have a market to sell the babies to,Not alot of people want to have snakes as pets vs. people who would take hamsters as pets. If your not able to sell the babies are you capable of housing them in the future?

Just a few things to think about. Personally George, as much as you want to get into breeding, I think you want to look at all avenues that go along with having baby snakes. It certainly isn't like having cute fuzzy baby hamsters or mice. Please put real thought to this before you decide on what you do! Good luck to you mate!
