Bulbs keep blowing...

I am having a terrible time with the bulbs in our heat lamps. They are lasting only 1-2 months at a time before I replace them. The lamps themselves are Exoterra lamps rangins from nearly brand new to several years old. If it was just one lamp having this issue, I'd buy a new one... but it's across the board. The bulbs have all been ZooMed, so I think I am going to switch to Exoterra bulbs. They are a little more expensive but I've replaced the bearded dragon bulb three times since October and I'm getting tired of buying new ones.

Anyone else having this problem with the ZooMed heat bulbs?

Hi Lauren!

One thing I can say that may or may not help you, is to never touch the bulb itself when you are screwing them in. The oil from your fingers will cause the bulb to burn out much quicker than the life expectancy of the bulb. I personally do not know why this happens (something about the intensity & distribution of the heat) but I have found this to be true. I use a cloth (like a dish towel) to hold the bulb when I screw them in and if I inadvertently touch the bulb I wipe it off until I am relatively sure there is no oil on it. I currently have two zoomed bulbs and they have lasted about 6 months so far and are going strong.
