Canadian Rattlesnakes

Ok it's been really nice for the last three days and it's been absolutely killing me that I couldn't go looking for snakes because I was working. Well today I was off early so I stopped at home to pick up the camera and went straight to the dens!!

Total count was 7 Rattlesnakes and 1 Bullsnake ;D And I know I probably walked past many more and didn't see them because of the long grass, man these little suckers blend in well here on the prairies. There was one spot where I thought I could see a hole about 20feet from where I was standing but there was a patch of long grass all around it and I just had a feeling that something was there....man was I right!! I very very carefully took a few steps in and then spotted the first one about 4 ft in front and to the right, as soon as it saw me it started rattling. As soon as it started it made another one start going about 3ft to it's left, and then that one set off a 3rd snake another 3ft to it's left. I hadn't even looked at the hole I thought I had seen yet so I worked around those three and sure enough there was a big bastard right at the hole too!!

Awesome day!! Man I love finding these guys. Anyway here are some pics of todays and this years first finds..........

Here's the lone Bullsnake today, sitting wedged in the middle of a bush.

Whoa. I wouldn't be brave enough to go looking for rattlers, but those are great pics. I can't believe how light coloured the snakes are. Are they mostly that blonde in your area? And the bullsnake...sshhh...you don't see me.....

Actually there are many that are blonde in this area, patternless ones have been found quite often as well.....you do get the brown-grey patterned ones in greater numbers but the den I went searching most looked to be very bright.

You definately have to be carefull when looking for these guys, whenever I'm near long grass my eyes are planted wherever I plan on taking my next step and I move very slow. Past years cattle were grazing in the area so the grass wasn't as long but this year everything has grown in to make it challenging. :grin01:

All I ever found was the western garter snakes.. Nothing ever that cool Ryan.. I wonder what kind of finds can be made at Frenchman's Vally at this time of the year..

I should really get out and do some feild herping here ..Wheathers nice and so many critters...

Ryan, those are fantastic pictures!!

I've never really gone snake hunting. Now that I have more of an understanding and less fear, I think my daughter and I may do that.

Not sure what is in my area. All I know of are garter snakes. Tons of those in my yard every year.

If i remember correctly. you could even go out and find some Rubber Boas (canadas only boid) which are harmless.. small and fun .

A little travelling would be in order to find Rubber boas as they are only found in BC and possibly the extreme southwest of Alberta.

Kathy: In your area you are probably limited to Garters, Salamanders and frogs....here's a good site to see what you may find in your area and how to identify it

Yeah man, good find.

One thing about Florida, to many damn places for snakes to hide that coming across that many in one spot is a rare find for most. I've wondered how many snakes I have walked by due to all the hidding spots Florida has to offer.
