Seriously though, this was my first show as a vendor, and it was a great learning experience. I met some cool people, hung out with two good friends all weekend, and made friends with a few more.

I did wholesale all of my common things out... I won't mention to who, as I don't want him to be flooded with emails that he may not want due to my blabbering, but thanks again for the help, dude.

I also picked up a female Nicaraguan Boa het for Type II anery... at a price no-one would turn down: free. She's full of piss and vinegar, but with a little luck, I'll get her out of that. The guy I got her from was a super cool guy, had a table right beside me, but all I remember is his first name: Chris. I have an email out to Camby, he should know the guy, and I'll put his details on here. If you're in the market for a RTB, you'll owe it to yourself to check this guy out.

Also, the guy to my right was a photographer, and had some high-end ball pythons... I ended up buying one of his prints, I'll scan it, put some watermarks on it, and show it here. He's close to Myrtle beach, SC, and his work is VERY VERY good. His name was Michael Jolliff. I have his contact info if anyone is interested.

Oh, and I sold some stuff for Camby, and was generously rewarded a male Keys Corn ph. terrazzo and charcoal for my services. The dude is bad, cant wait to get him a female next year. Thanks again man, I really appreciated that...

I heard that this show had very low attendance. I am puzzled as to why though. Any thoughts? It's only the second one though.
 
it sucks that "the price was wrong". but at least you got to go out and learn some stuff and meet people. thats always a good kicker.
 
Too many vendors.
Too many critters.
Not enough buyers.

Febuary show was really good....but I was one of a few with corns. This show had oodles and oodles of cornsnake sellers....not to mention ball pythons, boas, etc. etc. etc. Good show for a buyer, poor show for a seller.
 
I saw so many things I wanted but unfortunately I couldn't buy anything. I have nowhere else to keep them! :(
 
yep... Jeff summed it up perfectly.

I heard that there were a lot of festivals going on all over the place on Saturday... it could have contributed to the low attendance. Plus im sure the timing, with summer vacations ending and the Christmas season ramping up, didnt help much either.

Still, I didnt lose money on the weekend, so all in all, not TOO disheartening.
 
At least they didn't have it next weekend. The Renaissance Festival opens then which is only like 15 minutes from where Repticon was, and I would have definitely been there instead of Repticon.
 
I just talked to Bill - he is still on the road. Thank goodness he shared a ride and expenses, did talks to help pay for tables, and didn't bother to take any corns and stress them out! At least we didn't lose money doing the show, but didn't really make much, either. The good points were that he got to see some old friends that he had not seen for a while, visit with some vendor friends, take some nice photos, and that the Repticon people are always nice to work with, even if we don't always do well financially. So the show was still probably somewhat worthwhile. He said that other vendors are beginning to realize that since animals are selling for practically pennies, they also want to sell kids toys and other cheap drygoods. So even that stuff is not selling too well for any one vendor anymore. The pie is just getting sliced into too many pieces these days!

I do think that supply and demand will prevail, and someday soon we will see some vendors deciding not to do shows anymore (or maybe even get out of the reptile business completely), and some shows will probably fall by the wayside (I see that NARBC has dropped the Chantilly show this year), and some sort of equilibrium will be reached. It is just going to be some difficult times getting to that point.

Yep....5 years ago or so I used to be the only person at the southeastern shows selling snake related kids items. I was also one of the few offering to let kids or adults take photos with corns, burms, boas, caimen, etc. Soon enough people saw that I was taking a lot of pictures and more and more people started doing it. At one of the Atlanta shows there was 3 people doing the photo thing.....NOT including me! This past weekend there was a vendor with a dedicated table displaying a large burm and offering to take your picture with it. Time are a changing....
 
We used to do Burm photos back in the mid 70s at a few fairs and lots of shopping malls, along with our reptile exhibit. That was back when you had to use Polaroid or Kodak self developing film. It was pretty popular way back then. We haven't tried it again at the reptile shows in recent years. We keep talking about it, but are trying to think of a way to distinguish it from what others are doing - maybe a really cool background. Haven't decided yet. But we may do some kind of photo thing one of these days, since we are at so many shows already, anyway.
