My Amel is gravid. I just noticed the eggs 2 days ago and she shed last week.One problem is She just turned 2 years of age.( got her as a 06 hatchling).Another Problem is I dont know if they will be good or not. She did spend some time in with male snake during a move to another apt. But he too is only just now turning 2. So far she is looking good no problems. But with her being so young, should I be concerned about her getting egg bound??? ... (as a helper she is 31 inches long and she is normally right around 240 grams,at last weigh in)

I also went ahead and put a box in her tank and started reading everything on egg care just in case they are good eggs...
 
Yes, you should definitely be concerned! She's too young and too small for babies, but it's a little too late for that. I would recommend that you continue to read everything you can find on hatching and esp. on dealing with egg-bound females. I would also recommend that you get a line on a good reptile vet... just in case...

That said, she may have no problems and you may be pulling your hair out shortly trying to find time to care for a clutch of hatchlings. But then again, we've had experienced herpers on here lose mature females when they become egg-bound. There is a reason not to co-hab esp. young snakes.

Have I scared you? Good... get your butt out there and do some more reading so when the time comes you won't need any of the knowledge.... but if you do, you'll know what you are looking at and what to do to help your little girl out. :)
 
I hope she's had access to plenty of water lately, don't take that opportunity away from her. :licklips:And even though you're near the end of the "gestation rope", some extra last minute exercise would do her some good. Handle her for 15 minutes or so 2-3 a day until she's ready (she could lay today, or 10 days from now, who knows). And yes, do lots of homework... good luck!
 
No you havent scared me..... I am info searching and yes the vet has been told and I have his personal cell number if I need him(its great when you play poker with your vet).

I was wondering if anyone has gone through an egg bound experience....

Roy Munson, our moderator, lost one last year to being egg-bound. There are several that have had experiences with it. You might send him an email or start another thread and label it Egg-bound Questions or something similiar

I gone through it twice (2 times more than I'd like)... happy to help with any questions with that. If you see that she has moved the eggs all the way to her vent, causing a bulge, and they get stuck there, you'll know it. But at this point, she shouldn't be egg bound, cross that bridge when you get to it.

And with the water, make sure she has fresh water available, but if she has a fairly large water bowl, remove it. Don't tempt her to lay her eggs there, just make sure the water is in a small cup/bowl. Keep us updated.

JMK thanks ... I just removed the large dish and put a small one in there...

Now if she lays her eggs in the tank and not in the bedding box.. How do you move the eggs to the right place and/or should I just make a tub with nothing but bedding in it? And leave her in that.
 
If you haven't asked yourself this question yet, you should. Do you even want eggs/babies? Even if you didn't, do you know someone who would, and would they incubate them for you? Hopefully in your "homework" in the next several days, you'll be more comfortable in your decisions and how you take care of that preggers girl of yours and her eggs.

With eggs/babies comes quite of bit of resposibility. You'll have to house the little ones (if the eggs are fertile anyway), and you'll have a lot of little mouths to feed. Sorry, just playing a little devil's advocate here.:devil01:

As far as where she lays her eggs, most likely you won't have to worry about her laying out of her box. But if she does, just make sure you're checking her enclosure 2-3 times per day. If those eggs were found out of the lay box soon enough, they'd be fine. You shouldn't disturb her while she's laying though. If you're planning on incubating, get your incubating substrate/box ready immediately. How do you incubate? What should you use?... homework;)
 
Thats okay like WEE did earlier devil advocates makes you think.... The babies are not the concern, plenty of room and housing and plenty of friends already said if the eggs are fertile and hatch out that they would take one. I belong to the local Herp club, which tonight, I get announce the situation and rack some local brains. I figure any left overs I would offer to the club and/ or in November we have a auction to raise money for the club and I would put them up for auction. Guys so far you have been awesome if you think of anything else in the next day or two let me know... AND AGAIN THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH ... When she lays I'll post pics....
 
I'm happy to help with questions too. I just went through it these past two weeks. My Amel Lenore would turn 2 in Nov (Maybe Oct) and she became Gravid by spending time with my normal corn, which I was told didn't need to be separated until 2 -.- Well, I had to go through this whole situation while she was laying eggs.
She laid two slugs, burried one out of her box and one in, then stopped. 4 days later she laid another slug in her box. 3 days later she STILL had 5 eggs in her therefore I had to take her in and found out that if I brought her in she would of had to have surgery. The guy pushed out a little over 2 inch long egg still wrapped up in the sac. She would have died if i didn't get that out.
Later in the night she laid the rest of her 4 eggs which all but 1 turned out nicely.
She ate today too but she's very weak.

Just keep an eye on your corn so this problem doesn't happen.
 
My Amel female is pretty small and she laid 2 accidental clutches this year. I rescued her and she was cohabed with the large male, so when I got her she was gravid. She was very skinny after laying the first clutch then she double clutched. She is doing great now. So good luck with your girl I hope she'll be fine. As long as you have a vet on hand and a place for the hatchlings you'll be ok. And make this a learning experience like I did, you can't put Corns together even for a couple mintues. Hope everything turns out fine keep us updated.
 
Eggs came Last night 6 of them... They appear to be non fertile.. but they are still in the box and I plan on taking them over to a friend from the herp club. He breeds snakes and he will inspect them for me.... Candy appears fine. and even was drinking from the water dish when I found the eggs... THANK YOU ALL for your help.....
 
That's great that she is doing fine.

Did you pick her up and make sure all the eggs were out? If you let her run through your hands normally you'll feel if there is an egg left. She probably doesn't have any left but just to be on the safe side.

And again glad to hear she laid her clutch with no problems.
