Corn Snake Gender?

Hi Everyone,

This is a cool and helpful website/forum!

I am considering buying a corn snake. I held one at the pet shop today and I think I am hooked!

I just wondered if anyone can help me out with a way to tell the gender of a corn snake?

I am reading about sand not being the best for corns. Anyone know why this is?

Thanks very much!! :santa: :crazy02:

Welcome to the site! And yea, you wait till you get one, then you'll want another one...or five... :grin01:

As for gender, the only truly reliable way is to get the snake popped or probed. This isn't very nice for the poor thing and can hurt the snake unless it's done by a proffesional. So don't attempt it. ;) Some say the length of the tail is an indicator, but that can be unreliable.

Also, sand can be ingested by the snake, which can lead to impaction. Basicly meaning your snake's stomach won't be able to handle it and it will die. Most would swear by Aspen as a substrate for them, although many use newspaper or paper towel, and there are other substrates out there.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for the information about corn gender and a good substrate. I think I better try to buy the corn manual also.

You all are very knowledgeable!
