Cottonmouths!! Woot!!!

MegF.

That's for sale???
Found these today at Riverwalk in Augusta, GA....never thought I'd find any there...there's usually copperheads (still haven't found any myself) but not a whole lot of these...I knew I'd hit gold when I found them! I found the first one and while looking for a better spot to photograph him there was another one!! Sweeeet!
This one was about 3 ft. long

Nice! I'm not fond of them as captives, but they sure are cool where they belong!

There are plenty of captive born and bred out there now....Wouldn't mind getting a hypo...I have a Mexican Cantil which is the South American version of the cottonmouth...she's a kick! it was super awesome seeing them out there though....didn't expect to find any there ever....now to find the copperheads....

They STINK, Meg! Oh, the whole enclosure, nay -the whole ROOM is musky and awful. Copperheads too, to a lesser degree.

I keep my copperhead on natural earth and there's no smell at all unless I work with him...then he musks...otherwise he doesn't smell at all. My cantil is on natural earth as well and it doesn't smell in her cage either...she doesn't even musk when you work her...she's pretty easy on the hook...so far...

Gotta watch those cantils - had a keeper at the Houston Zoo tell me she'd rather work with black mambas or lanceheads than their cantil. She is convinced theirs is just downright mean.

They might be...they are quite...er...squirrely and she definitely wants to know what you're doing the entire time you're there. Still she's no worse than the copperhead and in a lot of ways..easier. She's certainly nicer to work on a hook than he is. They might just have a particularly crazy one too. I had a neotropical rattlesnake before the current one I had that was downright nuts. I ended up trading her back to her old owner for this one I have. So much easier to work with. The other one actually gave me nightmares....

I'm in awe of those of you who keep hots - personally I have no inclination at all to ever keep them, but appreciate those who do. Watching Viperkeeper on YouTube is about as close as I need to be...

they are certainly not for everyone and I waited a long while before getting my first one...much like any snake...one morphs into more! My hubby wants me to stop at what I have...I'd still very much like a red diamondback though...almost picked on up at the show last time...sooo close! They are beautiful and special. Definitely a huge responsibility though and not one that should be taken lightly...

I'm hoping for copperheads too so don't feel bad! Those are going to be on my serious hunt list now that I found the other....not that I won't keep looking to see if these stick around.
