Dead Embryo?

RobbiesCornField

Bring it on.
How can you tell if an embryo has died? I had a clutch where all 4 of the other eggs pipped as normal, but when the last egg hadn't, I cut the egg. When I shine a light on it, it's pupils don't constrict. As this is my first clutch, I've never seen a dead embryo before. Is it possible that this little one just didn't make it?

It seems that D.I.E.s (Dead In Egg) crop up here and there every breeding season, for many different reasons. Sometimes it's very obvious as to why it died (extreme kinking, fusing, or other deformity) and other times the snake seems to be perfect.

If you aren't certain, you can try giving it a gentle prod with a pen or pencil, as live hatchlings tend to shy away from the contact.
