Decision Time!

I am expanding my family by one in the next few weeks

However which one is the choice...

I'm looking at beardies and my girlfriend is looking at tortoises... we are both willing for either but only one!

Any support out there?

One thing to consider is- the dragon will live about 10 years. The tortoise, 50 years or more. Most tortoise species do best if kept outdoors as much as possible. A dragon is going to be more the type you can carry around with you. Tortoises don't really like that.

IF that's the only 2 choices I'm leaning towards the Beardie. Get a cool morph though..
I love torts BUT it saddens me to see so many being rehomed. 50 to 100 years is a pretty long commitment and no matter how determined tort owners are to keeping them a lifetime so many things happen in life and the poor tort is either neglected and dies or is re-homed over and over. If I lived in the south then I would have a tortoise farm but alas I live in the great white north like you and it just isn't conducive to keeping torts IMO.

My last word (ok pic) is this :D

This is true.
I think either way eventually we will end up with both. It's more we have one empty tank right now and don't want to buy another yet :)
Hoping for a good tally!

Don't you love the GWN? :)

That is a very pretty boy/girl! And thank you for the input :)

If you are looking for something to keep in a tank, a tortoise is not the right animal. Even the smallest tortoise, in the largest tank, will not thrive, and will most likely develop a deformed shell. To keep a (small) tortoise indoors, you need a tortoise table.

What does a tortoise table allow? We knew he'd have to be out for exercise, just figuring tank was good for night/food stuffs

The one thing that has kept me from owning a bearded dragon is their need for lots of bugs, which can add up in cost and also I wouldn't want to have to keep live bugs around. If that doesn't bother you, then I think that would be a good choice.

Thanks and yes it is a boy/girl :bird:

I just looked up your weather. I'm moving there !!!!!! LOL better than ours:sobstory:

I get crickets for other herps but you might find it a pain for 1 bug eater like hypnoctopus said. I'd put the beardie on Dubais myself. They don't climb or stink.

PS; Blue tongues don't eat bugs or rodents :D

The decision has come through

Leopard gecko...

Yeah it surprised me too... but I'm okay with it! It means there is still a big tank available for another scaley in the future.

This is mostly because crickets are noisy and they eat mealworms... once we have a bigger place with a "pet only room" we may get our beardie

Dragons can eat superworms and silkworms and hornworms- all of which do not carry parasites :) for future reference.

Can't wait to see pics of the leo! Are you getting a fancy one?
