dehydrated snake

Hi!

I got a juvenile ball python 3 weeks ago. She turned blue on the 2nd week and became dehydrated (wrinkled skin). On the 3rd week, she was trying to shed but the skin wont come off. Last night she was able to shed but it was in pieces. She still has skin on his neck and head.

How do i help her shed completely?

How do i rehydrate her? she has a water bowl big enough for her to submerge but she never does. i also seldom see her drink.

Thanks!

Chris

by the way, i read from the web and in the forums that I should make her crawl in damp towels and provide a water hide.

Regarding the treatment of dehydration, is it advisable to give her 1:1 gatorade solution?

hello :)
how are you keeping her? i keep my royals (babies and juvies) in a realy usefull tub on newspaper whith a decent hide and waterbowl. also they should be sprayed daily as in the wild they realy only eat during the rainy season (they're easy to fool lol). it may be worth adding a moss hide for her in the hot end of the tank. incidentaly what sort of heating system do you use?

Kat

Thanks for your reply Kat.

I keep her in a vivarium on newspaper. she has a hide and water bowl too. I live in the Philippines and I don't use a heating device since it's very humid here.

I placed damp paper towels last night and it helped her shed the skin on her neck. My problem now is her skin on her head and nose.

Anyway, do you think is should give her gatorade solution?

Chris

She might like a bowl with wet moss in it. Why do you think she's dehydrated? Does she just have dry skin/retained shed? To get that off, I'd put her in a container with a lid, with air holes, in warm water not over her head, with a towel or washcloth on the bottom, and soak her for 20 minutes, then take her out and let her crawl through a damp towel.

Your snake doesnt need anything but pure water for hydration. Gatorade is designed with electrolytes that humans need to regenerate and soduim as well..your snake simply needs moisture from water to rehydrate. Follow up with the moist hides that had been mentioned and the next time you feed her make the food item wet and that will give some extra hydration as well. best wishes.

Erm, didnt want to appear the Dumba$$, but what is gatorade?! (was also worried about repying to a royal post in a cornsnake forum :-offtopic lol)

But as Dawn said just water will be absolutely fine!

Hi, pedialite for children over a sports drink. Did you check for black mights ??? That is the only reason I can think of since the place where you live is hot and humid. Do you have air condishing if so you snake can get a cold and that would dehydrate it . the up and down temps. will get the snake sick.

hi guys,

sorry for the late reply. I was down with flu and had no access to the net.

anyway, i helped my bp shed by using damp towels. he's ok now.

i checked for mites but didn't see any.

Pardon my ignorance with the gatorade. I read it from this website (under 'fluids to offer) :shrugs: http://www.triciaswaterdragon.com/hydrate.htm

thanks for the help guys! I'll be making him a water hide and increase humidity :)

Gatorade is a super-popular (arguably, it may be the most popular) sports drink in the US, most commonly available bottled or as a dry powder that you add to water. It now comes in many colorful and tasty colors, though the original is a yellow lemon/lime. Here's a 30-sec commercial about the origin of its creation (video on YouTube.)

Great for humans, but not sure about its effect on snakes and other animals. Though I notice that in the linked article it was said to dilute it to 1:1. I'd be curious to know how using it would turn out.

I have used Gatorade on my bearded dragons it is safe . It workes on snakes too but pedilite is better

Gatorade is a sports drink marketed here in the US by Pepsico. It was originally designed for the Florida Gators (college football team).
