Do you think kids should be micro-chipped?

IT'S GOOD TO BE KING
Do you think kids should be micro-chipped?

I'm not sure if the technology is here yet but if there was a micro-chip that communicated with satelights and these chips could be monitored by parents to track their kids over the internet and by law enforcement once permission by the parents was given. Once the person turned 18 they could have the choice to remove or keep it. Would you support this idea? Would you have this chip inserted into your children?

I think kidnappings and sexual assaults on kids would go down. I think parents would also have more controll over their kids good or bad. For example the 16 year old girl who told her parents she was going to Canada and then headed to Jordan/Israel could have been a disaster for that girl if she ever did make it to Israel. The chip would allow parents to see where their kids are and law enforcement the upper hand to track these kids down. If we implanted these chips when kids are born and didn't tell them where it was in their body till they were 18 that also would lower the chance of the kids cutting themselves and taking out the chip. Would it work 100%, no but with every idea there is good and bad and I think in the long run the good outweighs the bad.

There are times I wouldn't want my parents tracking me but that's because I am up to no good and understand they just care. If I was ever taken I would feel better I could be found.

No...just no. What's to stop the government from chipping everyone and making the entire country a prison? Kids need to be taught right from wrong and how to take care of themselves, not held in line with a microchip. It's disgusting.

well I didn't want to take it that far, shipping everyone. That's why I said at 18 they could remove it. But I understand your point.

Agreed with Candace above. Besides, I'm sure there have been parents driven to the point of where, if lost, they don't want them returned. ;)

regards,
jazz

Actually, I don't see a problem....IF the chip would only be activated when the child is missing, with a very fast and easy police procedure. So privacy and self controlled behaviour would still be unharmed.

At the other hand; how easy is it to distort such a signal? And to find it with special equipment, so the bad guy can cut it out?!

For THE LOVE OF GOD NO! And as for turning them on and off you would trust that to the government? "Sure well turn those off till we need them." Just like they werent listening in and recording our phone conversations, right?

Ok, this is a big debate along the same lines that I've had with my conspiracy theorist uncle many times... He always ends with, "Then everyone will be chipped." whenever we discuss chipping criminals. He has a point about kids, and that's, "If they want the kid bad enough, what's to prevent them from cutting it out... or off, and the damage that would cause?". I own stock in a company that makes the RFID chips by the way, and that's what sparks the whole thing. But if your child carries a cell phone, they can be tracked, for an extra fee, as well as employees. Cell phones have GPS chips in them. We had the option to get the package for our drivers, which even tells you if they are exceeding the speed limit on the road they are traveling down. It can also be programmed to give a warning if they are at the same location for an extended period of time... something to think about if you have a company phone... not to mention they can purchase another option of recording all your conversations....

I think we should work on the technology to micro-size kids. They could easily be kept individually in Sterilite tubs on aspen. This would minimize sibling rivalry, and allow for careful monitoring of health. How many of you parents have encountered a random regurge in your home's hallway, but could not tell from which child it was expelled? :sidestep:

What an interesting topic... just curious as to what sparked the debate?

And as for my thoughts... I think that there definitely are pros and cons to microchipping anyone... In the case of children I think that it could stop things like kidnappings, and other bad things.. But for the parent to use the chip as survaillence I think is extremely wrong... if a parent cant commit to the time, effort and discipline that it takes to raise a child they shouldnt have the child and no microchip can substitute the parenting skills needed. So yeah, definitely not something that i think should happen even though it may have its good points...

Mmmmmm...... I thought we were talking about GPS chips, not the ones that need to be scanned standing close to the subject, like on dogs... that would not be of any use to prevent kidnapping :shrugs:

No, no, no.... I think no matter what advantages it might have the cons far outweigh the pros. It scares me that the technology exists and that people are even considering it. There is enough limitations on freedom already, males have to register for the possibility of a draft, the phone call recording, etc (I make a lot of calls out of the country as my family resides outside the U.S. and I hate the thought of some FBI suit listening in)...I get so much junk mail already, I can imagine how much worse things like that would be if there were chips implanted in people. Safeway keeps track of the food you buy if you use their card, the credit bureaus keep track of your credit rating, the government keeps track of your taxes, every day the phrase 'big brother is watching' seems more and more true. Not to mention this reminds me a little of the 'mark of the beast' prophecy in the bible, not that I'm even very religious. Imagine if you didn't have a chip you couldn't buy food etc? Maybe it's a little far fetched but I wouldn't want a chip and if I had kids I wouldn't want them chipped either.
Even if there was a 'chipping' program and every kid in America had a chip the perverts would simply turn to the third world countries that couldn't afford chips for their victims. What a great way to stimulate the black market.

No I don't think children should be micro-chipped. Yes I think they should be micro-sized.
Seriously, I think very good parents have had their children abducted. People who want to take children for their own pleasure will find a way, sadly. I don't think it has anything to do with time commitment, as in many families both parents must work. All to often bad things happen to good families.
It is bad enough the government can track our phone calls, our TV usage, as Jen said the food we eat, on and on. Heck how do we know we don't have a chip in us somewhere in-planted at birth? susan

AMEN!!! Someone even tries to do that to me I will open a can of woopbooty up on them :grin01: ! Even though im having Tex ( my border collie) microchiped on the 7th of July :grin01: .Hypecritical?? :grin01: . But thats a diffrent storie.

in a word... no in two words... _ _ _ _ no. A phone is a voluntary piece of equipment that you purchase for your child. If you choose to have the GPS to know where they are you can do that... I am down for that. But a chip installed and controlled by the Govt. NOT ON YOUR LIFE!!! TOO many instances of the govt. abusing power, misusing power, and just plain selling us down the river for me to trust them with knowing where my child or I am. If I want to be invisible to the govt that is my choosing. More and more I am seeing the value in that and the possible need for it. The govt is starting to become too far reaching and intrusive. They have plenty of access... no need to give them more.

From my LE perspective...

some of my greatest on the job experiences and joys have been finding lost children. This technology would make this easy. One of my biggest downs was looking for lost children, later found deceased. I've done that twice.
The technology exist not only for global positioning, but behavior modification.
One thing I learned very fast on this job, you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. It would take a very high profile case either way to really decide the fate of this topic.

No.
No, that is an extremely bad idea, IMO.
Not only is it a gross breach of privacy rights, which I believe ALL people have regardless of age, but it could also be potentially problematic.
Sure, if a child runs away they can be tracked, but is that really a very good thing? Sounds silly, but think about it: if the child knows they can't run away - and running away is more than not a response to deep distress or depression - what are their other options? I think there would be an enormous rise in young persons' suicide attempts, or at the very least anti-social behaviour.

In short, I don't agree with it. At all. Children are children, not possessions, and I think this is simply a product of the human race's strange desire to know EVERYTHING.

Great question

I'm not sure I'd advocate implanting chips underneath the child's skin - but I can definitely see the potential of chipping a kid's underwear, especially little kids who don't understand the "don't talk to strangers" principle (you'd be surprised by how many kids still don't get the whole stranger thing).
Sure, it's not the most foolproof plan, but you can be certain of two things: the perv will not know about the kids underwear until they're out of the mall/park/zoo etc, which gives the cops a decent lead to work with, and of course, the chip doesn't need to be cut out from under the kid's skin.

As for teens: don't even think of trying to control them, if they want to do something, they'll find a way - I sure did when I was a teen and my parents were more conservative than average. Once they're about 15 or 16 yrs old, it's time to switch from "raising" the kid to "guiding" him/her - and pray to God that all your efforts will pay off.

Plissken, just to play...

devil's advocate (because I'm not sure which side of the fence I'm on) but what options does a runaway have. More often than not, homelessness, drug addiction, and prostitution.
If this idea does take off and become seriously debated or considered it will be challenged by the first high-profile case to come along.
Say Ted Kennedy's grandson is kidnapped. There will be those who cry this technology is available; why the heck aren't we using it?
Say Ted Kennedy's grandson runs away and digs the chip out of his body, and due to complications dies.
Say they cause some medical problems in a few isolated cases. The media will blow it out of proportion with a blitz of, "This could happen to your child!"

Would I microchip my child. I don't know, haven't come to that bridge yet. We chip our pets. We also put our pets to sleep when they're in pain. But not our loved ones. But that is a different debate.
As I said, I believe you're damned if you do, damned if ya don't.
