Does anyone else hate Windows 8 as much as I do?

And you used to be a computer programmer, if I remember correctly, Rich. If you can't figure it out, how is the average, non techie type user supposed to do it?

It is true that I have found answers to questions on Google. But some of the answers have been just too technical, and I gave up on them until I could consult with a "computer guru". But I paid just $100 to Apple for unlimited, one on one, half hour learning sessions for a whole year when I bought my new Mac. The sessions can cover anything I want them to cover - what a deal! It is about a half hour drive each way to the Apple Store - a bit inconvenient, but not too bad. But after a year's time, I am hoping all of my questions will have been answered in a way that is far less frustrating than trying to figure it out on my own.

Yeah, used to program PCs for a living. Also worked at hardware field service and tech support for quite a while, too. So I think I do have a knack for this stuff. But I do fully understand that just because I was technically competent in the past doesn't mean that I will ALWAYS be technically competent with new technology. Still, I made a good living by being able to figure out problems and fixing them and was pretty much self taught all along the way. So I think I should be able to figure out most things without a whole lot of brain strain.

But, quite frankly, if technology moves too far away from what I am NOW comfortable to work with, then I will have to retain the older operating systems I am comfortable with until all the applications I use simply just stop working. Heck, this version of vBulletin this site runs on is rather old, but the newest versions of vBulletin lost traction when most of their programming staff quit when the company was taken over by an internet marketing firm. So far it seems to be running well, but with each new update of the server level software there is ALWAYS the risk that it will crash and burn the older software running on the server.

While I don't expect Microsoft to admit that maybe they made a mistake, perhaps they will see the tide turning in favor of alternative options and come up with an update to their update that will move more in line with what most people REALLY want from their PCs. As was mentioned, if I wanted to work with a tablet, then I would BUY a tablet. Don't try to make my desktop PC or my laptop PC into something I don't want it to be. And most DEFINITELY, I certainly will not be buying a new PC if Win8 is the only option I have for the OS. I, too, would look real hard at the option of getting an Apple instead.

May I ask how much you are getting paid to say that? :laugh01:

Seriously, what do you like so much about it?
Two words... Start Screen. I LOVE that thing. As a super geek of many flavors, I find any approach at breaking away from archaic paradigms to be a pretty awesome adventure.

More specifically though, it really boils down to two primary aspects. Modern software and efficient use and accessibility. While Windows 7 is great (it was great enough to move me back to windows from Linux, which is quite a feat for an operating system) I sometimes get annoyed at the obfuscation of it all and the nested direction of navigating it.

I will admit the charms bar and a handful of gestures could have been designed better... but as already mentioned, it was developed with all in one media units and handhelds in mind so they did what they could.

I have a Kindle, I have used it one time for the internet, but I just read off of it.

I have a smartphone, my husband bought it for me (Samsung Galaxy) that I cannot for the life of me figure out how to call someone in my phonebook without going through at least 6 steps. I only use it to call my husband when I am on my way home from work and to make an appt with my manicurist!!!

I have learned to text AND add pics, but never use it to get online. I want my old phone back where I pressed one button, said "Jim", and it dialed my husband.

I want my computer to be a computer. I cannot get through a post or surfing without it going back to the blue screen with the icons, and then it pulls up something I have no idea about. I liked hitting Start, Control Panel and Add or Remove Programs to do so. I can't find it easily, I had to jump through hoops yesterday to remove something.

Maybe we are getting old, I remember the days when I carried my brick of a cell phone in a bag!!! I wish I had kept it, that would be fun to reminisce. I like the idea of each computer coming with its own 10 year old.

You know you can start typing on the start screen and it will bring up whatever you're typing for right? Like you could start typing "add remove programs" while at the start screen and it will bring it up. Doesn't get much easier than that.

I've had my Windows 8 since December. Before that, I had Windows XP.. And I am still very sad about my old laptop kicking the bucket! It may have been slow, but at least I knew how to use it!

I'm still afraid to go anywhere near the "start" screen. I miss my old start menu! Now, if I need to find something that doesn't already have a desktop shortcut, I have to do a whole search... Because that start screen is USELESS to me. I always end up tapping the wrong thing and bringing up some BS program like the stocks thing. And I still haven't figured out how to "customize" the start screen (which seems like a moot point, because I use very few programs and only those that open up on the normal desktop, anyway). It took me well over a month just to figure out how to close the apps so it would stop opening them up every time I touched the edge of the touchpad!

I actually strongly considered making the move to mac after my last computer died. But Macs are expensive! Even this cheapie little thing had to be a christmas present. We use Mac at work... There's still a lot about using/navigating it that I'm clueless on, but I've already come to like it more than Windows 8!

I've been Mac since 2006...I think. I've upgraded desktops three times, and have one macbook 13" (wish I'd gotten the 15"). I would be happy to never touch a windows computer again.

But then, to do any work at home, I have always had to keep one windows laptop, my most recent is W8 (easier after 8.1 update), that I special ordered with specified specs. I really like it (it's a monster), but it is more for toying around with. It is not touchscreen, nor did I want that.
I skipped over W7, in going from Vista to W8...and that gave me a great deal to learn and figure out.

You should upgrade to Windows 7 if you hate 8 so much.

I know I do!! Never has a computer ever made me so stinking mad as when my Mom first got her new one. Windows 8 is AN ABOMINATION!

Like Nythain said to search go to the START screen and just start typing, a search window will automatically pop up.

To customize the START screen right click on it. That will open a bar on the bottom with options. Left click on all the apps you don't use and then click "unpin from start".

To add apps/icons to the START screen, click on the down arrow in the lower left corner, if you don't see it left click the screen and it will show up, that will show the master app/program list.

Right click what you want on the START screen, a bar with options will open at the bottom of the screen, then just click "pin to start".

HTH

Well butter my ass and call me a biscuit! Awesome! I am so used to the same format for years that hadn't much changed since Win98 that Win8 just irked me.

Thanks for that tip!
