I have bred dwarves for seven years now, and the newborns are about half the size of a small pinkie. They'd make great hatchling food, if I had the heart to feed them. I might start freezing the runts though, because they always die anyway.
Others have posted here in the past that raise dwarf hamsters for feeders. I was considering it at one point but they cost too much at pet stores around here and never show up much at the local reptile show.
I went with ASF rats instead, but their pinkies are bigger than mouse pinkies when newborn.
Eric:
If you really want to try the dwarf hamsters I can help you out with the cost. Personally I hate the little buggers. It seems size is indirectly proportional to mean dispositions! Those little guys are just full of piss and vinegar. I never recommend them as kid's pets; too fast and nippy. But food....
