My little guy is having some serious problems right now! Here's where I asked about his initial condition:

http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135621&page=2

He started rolling around like crazy and stuffing his mouth with substrate a few minutes ago. I picked him up and he went completely limp. I rushed into the bathroom a cleaned the substrate out of his mouth by gently running water into it. Then I let him hang a little and rubbed him from body to head a few times and more came out. He kind of 'came back to life' as soon as I did that, although he was moving very weakly. I cut the fuzzy end of a q-tip off and used the stick end to get the rest out of his mouth, which he held open for me the whole time without problem. His mouth looks healthy on the inside, and I saw NO mucus during any of this. He's moving again, although very slowly, and the swelling in his head is gone. I have him on a towel in a big bowl so I can carry him around while he rests and keep an eye on him. I'll make the 1.5 hour trip to a vet tomorrow and hopefully they can help, but should I do anything else in the meantime?

^^^^^^^^^^This. Please let us know about his temps, how they are regulated and what kind of substrate and decorations you have in the viv.

Cool side is 75, warm side is 82. I use the Kaytee soft granule blend substrate. He has a 40 gallon tank with the same decorations in it that he's had for months.

He's doing a little better now. Moving about and acting somewhat normal. The swelling around the head comes and goes. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow. I hope he can make it until then!

I don't think there is anything you can do, I'm sorry. I hope he's okay, but this is often the sign of a bowel obstruction. It's a sign of pain. Poor baby.

Swelling is in the neck, not the other end, Nanci!

To the OP: as said so many times before.. Go to the vet!! Part of having animals is taking responsibility for them. Even if the closest vet is hours away, he obviously needs to go.

Swelling in the neck/head area

A few days ago my corn snake's (5 or 6years old) head/neck area had started to swell or bulge. I don't know what can be causing this to happen. If you see this please tell me what could be causing this to happen and what I should do about it.
Thank you.

Possible infection. Best thing to do is have a vet check it out.

Going back to the original issue with the head swelling, the snake seems to be puffing his head out in a way it can at least somewhat control. Do you think he might be trying to regurge something that isn't in there and in the process straining and weakening himself? I don't really have any knowledge on this, I just remember when I had an appendix issue I would dry heave and my face would get swollen. If this sounds stupid, just pretend I never brought it up...
