East TN herping?

Alli_Draggy

Wadjet's family
We're renting a cabin in the Great Smokies (Gatlinburg area) in a couple of weeks, and Alli really wants to go out and hopefully see some wild herps. (We haven't had much luck finding anything but frogs, toads, and turtles locally). Does anyone have any suggestions, both for what to do and what not to do (it would be cool to SEE a copperhead or rattler in the wild-but I don't want to get bitten by one).

If you are in the national park herping by means of turning over logs, etc is frowned upon and not allowed. You might want to get on the TN herp society page and see if they have any recommendations. You can always drop by the ranger station (visitor center) and ask about local wildlife spots but they are strict about staying on the trails and observing wildlife from a distance when on park lands which is most of the Smokies.
