Exercise support group?

Hi all. I was wondering if anybody would like to start an exercise support group on this thread. I'd like to walk three times a week, but getting my behind off the chair isn't always easy when it's cold outside. Does anyone else have any unmet exercise (or weight loss) goals they could use support with?

Maybe we can encourage/support/harrass each other. ;)

I'd like to lose like 50 or 60 pounds. Exercise and eating habits right now are crappy. I've started trying to exercise, took two long walks at the park this week and walked all the way across campus instead of taking the bus. But I have no self discipline and I find it too easy to lapse back into old habits.

Also, I am waaaaay out of shape....like, tried riding my bike up a hill and literally had to stop and sit on the sidewalk because I couldn't breathe and nearly threw up type of out of shape. :(

Well, would you like to set a goal (modest or grandiose) and try to stick to it? Maybe we can motivate each other and anyone else who wants to give it a try.

I am in the process of a Physical Education Major and health minor right now, and I too need to start doing more. It's seriously hard though since I am a full time student, have a job and now a reptile 4-h club to lead. Plus I live in OR and it rains here like crazy. Running is what I like to do the most but I hate treadmills, also don't like weight lifting because it's not very good training and ends up embalancing you rather than helping. I have gained like 15lbs since high school and I am constatly irritated that my pants are to tight and my Boyfriend says to me "we should do something about it" I'm like right, in my spare time.

The thing is we have to start with realistic goals. I said we could start running or using the exercise room here at our apt. complex twice a week. That's two more days then we are doing now, then work into other days especially during the summer, I love riding my bike around. We also play intramural sports on campus with games once or twice a week. We eat fairly healthy, but we could make healthier choices. We don't drink soda, we don't have junk food or candy, we have wheat bread or pasta and we do frozen veggies and make fruit smoothies using yogurt and frozen berries. I just gotta start exercising more. I can't stand seeing fat in the mirror.

K. Rene, would you like to set a goal (two times a week, like you mentioned) and then try to stick to it? I'd like some folks to report to when I do a walk or get some razzing when I wimp out.

I'd be interested in this too. I have CFS and have the best of intentions, but exercise does result in more than the usual pain/discomfort for me. I have had a Total Gym (for years) and barely used it as well as one of those Tony Little Gazelle's. If I could just use them 3 times a week, 10 minutes to start I'd be happy.

There's a social group for that, you know...I don't read it much, but I see it has new posts pretty frequently. You guys should check it out!

And Karen, you m ight want to look at the book by John Bingham "The Courage To Start." It's pretty motivational.

I just need to get off my lazy butt more often. I have hypothyroidism so its easier for me to gain weight and harder for me to lose it, but I know I am not helping myself any. I asked my boyfriend to help me get more motivated and he doesn't really help much cause he will sit in front of me eating junk food while telling me to be healthier. -__- My current goal is to start an exercise routine and actually stick to it, as well as cut out the junk food like popcorn and the cheese fries at school.

Read that book!!! I _know_ how hard it is to get out the door. Once you're out- then it's fine! I got the most exercise when I was riding my bike to work. Saved on gas _and_ had forced exercise!! I have a whole list of excuses for why I can't do that right now, if anyone needs to borrow them...

I have some knowledge in Paleo nutrition (I have taken one seminar on it, as well as some research, & will be going to another seminar in June, by a different speaker).
I also have been active in CrossFit, a high intensity workout program (P90X has the same concept as CrossFit). I also have some experience in Kettlebells (Russian weight that looks like a cannon ball with a handle).
I would be more than happy to help anyone who is interested.
After my divorce, selling my house & moving, (along with a shoulder injury) I pretty much fell off the nutrition & fitness wagon. I know what I need to do, & I am getting back on track. One thing that helps motivate me is I am planning for the Warrior Dash here in Washington. It gives me something to train for.
The Warrior Dash is a 3.55 mile (distance varies at different locations) course with 11 obstacles, & people of various fitness abilities participate. You go at your own pace, & it's basically for fun.
Having something to train for really helps. Even if you don't have an event to train for, you can pick a reasonable date & plan to be able to run a mile by a certain date, for example. Pick something that will challenge you, but that is an obtainable goal.

This is a great thread!

Okay, OkeeteeMom. I'll post my walks, or lack thereof, on this thread if you'll do the same with your workouts. Deal?

Nanci, I'm not sure what group you are talking about. I joined the FitClub but they hadn't had any posts since January, so it doesn't sound like what you were talking about.

I've been exercising 3 days a week since last October. Prior to that, i hadn't exercised or played sports for close to 5 years, so that combined with getting older caused me to gain 20 pounds more than my ideal weight. I'm 5'10" and with my frame, i prefer to weigh between 150-160lbs. My problem areas are my face and stomach. For whatever reason, i can have skinny arms and legs, but a chubby face and stomach hah hah, so i really wanted to change that. I didn't like how i looked in pictures and i also didn't like feeling easily winded.

It's easier for me to stick with exercising because i have worked out regularly for 1+ years at a time before, so i'm used to the relatively long-term commitment. This time around, I started off with weightlifting and cardio (treadmill/elliptical) combined with a relatively strict diet. I ate mostly lean protein, low-starch veggies, and low GCI fruits. I cut most carbs out of my diet, but i did give myself the weekend to cheat slightly. I am currently not as strict with my diet, but that is ok with me because i'm still in good shape. I have lost the 20 pounds, and now i've put on about 10 pounds of muscle.

It's relatively easy for me to motivate myself because due to my work schedule, i have all morning and most of the afternoon to make time for exercising. I imagine that people with a more traditional 9-5 work schedule find it more difficult to make time for exercise because after a hard day's work, people probably just want to relax. I find it easier to work out before work, but not if i had to wake up at 6am in order to do that. And if you have a family with children, making time must be ten times more difficult.

Anyway, it's all about making time for it. If you have the time, then exercise at least twice a week! Start off with baby steps. Obviously it's not just about appearance, but it's about your overall health as well. For some of us that are getting older 35+, it's more important than ever to stay fit.

What about me? Can I post too? I went for a walk on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday last week :) Not yet this week though :(

Of course you can post! :) I hope you will. The more of us that do this, the more support we'll have. My goal is to walk today and tomorrow. I will post whether I do it or not.

I am currently car free and haven't been in such good shape for 20 years!

I had a mild heart attack a year and a half ago, and it took me a year to finally get off my duff after that! I couldn't find the excercise that I really enjoyed until I took out that mountain bike that had been gathering dust and started pedalling my butt to work a couple times a week. That turned to every day. I bought a new bike (a Raleigh Sojourn) for every day use when not at work, as the roads here in the plant are, well, more suited to a mountain bike.

At that point, the truck and motorcycles sat idle, and I am now selling them. I know I live in Southern California where the weather helps, but I know many who do it in Boston and Chicago also, year round. It's amazing excercise, saves gas, and to sound like my hippie dippie self saves on pollution and hot house gasses.

Long story short, I am now 49 years old, have lost 25 pounds (I have more to lose, but am not sweating it...it'll come off) and have worked up to being able to cycle 60 miles!

If you decide you may want to try this, I reccoment a blog called eco-velo.
Here's a link: http://www.ecovelo.info/.

Check out some of the blogs they link to also...good info out there!

I have been walking an hour and 40 minutes at least 3 times a week for about 4 years now. Our bike shop is oval shaped and in between customers I walk in circles around the showroom floor with the radio playing and my handy-dandy pedometer. In the winter we have fewer customers so I can usually get it done faster. My goal is 5 days a week, and up until November I had been doing that. You would never guess I walk that much to look at me, but I think that the walking helped me recover faster from the surgery I had in December. Right now I am trying to get back to where I was, and I am almost here.

I am far from fit and could stand to lose at least 60 pounds, but my calves are rock hard and my blood pressure is really good.
