Feeding question for new hatchling and air flow under UTH question

My DD caught the corn snake bug from her big Brother so she is now the proud owner of a female caramel stripe corn. I do have a few questions now that I'll be needing to house 2 snakes. I have a 20 long for my DS's snake and we'll put my DD's into the 10 gallon tank that my DS's snake is in now. I'll be using a UTH on both of the tanks, however, on the 20 long I wanted to make sure that you can't have too much air flow under the UTH. The 20 gallon long will be on top of a stand with like a 3" overhang on each end (where the UTH will be) and my DD's will be on the lower part of the stand.

I also wanted to be sure that it is ok to run both tanks off of the same Ranco thermostat as long as the tanks are close to each other.

And last but not least. . . My DD's snake is very small, I know that we should wait to handle it but how long should we wait to feed it? A whole pinky? Split? I hope I didn't set us up for feeding problems as I ask the breeder a whole bunch of questions before we purchased but forgot to ask until after I'd already paid if they feed with frozen/thawed and he said when they are that little they feed them live. What should I do? I don't have anyone local that I can get live from? Any suggestion?

Thanks So Much
Becky

For the heating it should be all right, just make sure each snake has a good source of heat.

As for the feeding... Most people recommend waiting a week from it's last feed. Most stores feed their snakes every Monday. By saying from it's last feed, feed it a week after it last got fed from the store, not a week from when it arrived with you. :)

Sorry, I forgot to read the bottom before posting.

When your snake is small, it's best not to feed it on live food for the simple fact the snake can be injured from the mice and such. Feed it from frozen. You can order frozen food from a bunch of sites or locate one in your town on-line?

Hey Becky

First question - No you can not have too much air flow under the tank.

Second question - Yes, you can run both heaters off of one Ranco T-stat, but you will need to put the T-stat probe in the warmest tank and I think that will be the 10 gallon tank.

Third question - Since you can only get frozen/thawed(f/t) pinkies try them. The first time put the pinky and the corn in the deli dish that you got the corn in and see what happens. Also, do not watch the corn put the deli dish with the corn in it inside the 10 gal tank and cover it with a dish towel and leave it over the night. If that does not work want a week and try the same thing but this time brain the pinky. If that does not work search problem feeds here. You can also look for a local reptile club because someone in the club will be breeding mice.

Love the Fatman
