Fire Skink Pics

Took a few additional pics of the new fire skink. Anyone keep (or has kept) them? I have been having a heck of a time finding info on them. Fortunately most skinks seem to have similar care requirements.

He's just beautiful. I'd think his care would be pretty basic. Every skink I ever knew really liked loose soil (or whatever the bug-free alternative is) barely damp, to burrow in, and things to go under. And maybe a basking spot.

Yup, same basic skink treatment for them. This one is gorgeous! Is it male or female?

Thanks George! He has colored up quite nicely.

Oh, and I forgot to mention- I did name him Pele, after the Hawaiian god(des) of fire and volcanos, as per Nanci's suggestion. Thank you Nanci!! You are my pet naming QUEEN!

Sexing

Fire skinks are difficult to sex. Adult males tend to have larger heads maybe more streamlined in body shape than the female and may have more vivid colours than the females. These methods are not definite and it may be easier to sex animals in a group. Males are territorial and may fight if kept with other males, this can be useful in determine the sex of males within a group. It is important not to house two males in the same terrarium.

(One care sheet says they don't like to be handled, another says they get very tame :shrugs: )

I have had both. The one in our biology class ('97??) was exceptionally tame, and this guy is rather skittish. He will let me stroke his back, but does not like being picked up. I will work with him, slowly, but if he keeps reacting this way, he will just be a hands off pet. I'd like to hold him, but not at the expense of his health.
