Getting a new snake?!?!

OK, so I guess my girl Leucy absorbed her eggs, because here we are 4 weeks after her pre-lay shed and still no eggs. She looks big, but deflated. Anyway, I got a call from my pet store today and they told me they had an adult, male Leucistic just like her. I think I may pick him up and maybe breed them next season. What are your thoughts on this? Would two Leucy parents have only Leucy babies? I have read that Leucism is not supposed to be a genetic trait. Anybody here know for sure?

Their are no Leucistic cornsnakes, so you must be talking about a different type of ratsnake. If so, this belongs in the general chit chat area.

Leucism in Texas Rat Snakes is simple recessive...So I imagine depending upon what species your talking about, it's entirely possible it could be genetic.

It's ok, just note it for future reference. Leucism in Texas Rat Snakes is simple recessive, so pairing two Leucistics will produce more Leucisitics.

Thanks. I got the male yesterday. His color is beautiful, and no bug-eyes. He is lively, and likes to act tough, but he is a really cool snake.

Yes, bug eyes are bad. It's a genetic deformity and sadly bug eye offspring are sold and the problem is spread more and more.

Wow, thats some serious bug eyed-ness! :eek1: I didn't realise it could be a genetic deformity, i thought it was just a look some snakes have, that some then grew out of.

Is that quite common in Leuci Texas Rats? I'd never buy a snake that looked like that!

It is common because of the inbreeding that is done. I guess that when you inbreed for more than a generation or two, abnormallities are sure to pop up and surprise you. I know that in the beginning, a lot of albino burmese pythons were bug eyed. Not it is the Leucy's. I am not sure about any others, and the info I just gave is only what I have heard, not what I have researched.

I guess I'm a little late for saying this but I wouldn't exactly say your snake absorbed the eggs cause my two normals had there prelay shed like a month ago. I know cause they had shed like a week before. but it can depend on the temps of your house if its normally a little lower than what it might be in the wild. I can feel distinct lumps in all three of my females and my butter just shed. They also look like they are about to burst with eggs and it doesn't look like they will be in blue any time soon. :) I bet they're just waiting till I go out of town. though I may be wrong for the shed part I think you may just want to leave the lay box in her tank.
