Going To The Vet

Nanci

Alien Lover
Tomorrow will be my first experience taking a snake to the vet. (But I've used this vet for nearly ten years with pigeons, and more recently with a box turtle.)

Maizey is going to be seen about her recent regurging- which I suspect is a bad batch of mice- but since she's a LTC she most likely has parasites, and we can get that taken care of.

Addy (also a LTC) will be joining her to be wormed, also, although she isn't having any problems.

I'll post tomorrow what happens...

Nanci

Are you sure your not taking Addy to be inflated?! Did you step on her or something LOL

Best of luck Nanci! I'm sure all will go well.

Isn't she the coolest?? Actually, she needs to have her tongue retracted. :grin01:

Nanci

Wow... that is one interesting snake. Shmushed, by the looks of it. She also looks like she has a crazy grin on her face.

Best of luck with Maizey!

This is why she looks like that. Hooded:

Relaxed:

She thinks she's so scary. You should hear her hiss.

Nanci

That's extremely cool. I love when (relatively) little animals show lots of attitude. Is the hooded shape a kind of defense mechanism?

Yes, it's defensive. She does that, and rears up, and you absolutely can't get in front of her- she keeps the back of her head facing the perceived threat. I don't know if it's supposed to resemble a cobra, or eyes of some sort (most snakes that hood like that have big black spots on the hood) or what. She looks an awful lot like a pigmy rattler, too. She can hiss like crazy, and if all that doesn't work, hognoses will roll over and play dead with their mouth gaping open and their tongue hanging out. Then, when they think the danger has passed, they peek and see, and if the coast is clear, they roll back over.

Here's a Western hatchling playing dead:

He doesn't quite have it perfected- with all the tongue flicking.

Nanci

Thanks. I think she'll be ok, but I just don't want it to get out of control.

There's a whole separate post. Hey, a friend dropped off a bunch of books (snake) today- there's one I'm going to bring you! The pile of books also included a 1969 copy of Venomous Reptiles by the Mintons.

I saw the seperate post...

better safe than sorry I guess. Get them all wormed. I'm looking forward to seeing that book thanks.

The Minton book isn't for you, unless you really want it- (but I really want it) there's another surprise that I know you'll be interested in!
