Gold fish ok?

I know that mice are the primary, and ideal food for snakes. But I saw somebody feed their garden snake a gold fish in its water bowl. It seemed to go fine, if a garden snake an do it, I assume it would be fine for a corn?

This is would just be a regular 20 cent small gold fish, would it be ok if I feed my snake a gold fish? I just like to mix it up.

Speaking of which, is there anything other than mice I can feed my snake?

I've read gold fish contain a chemical that makes them gold that isn't good for snakes. I can't remember what the chemical is(old age). And I can't find the thread I read it from(old age again).
Someone here may know though.

Basically.....no,... just mice and rats.

i've seen that too on youtube. but remember that garter(sp?, and i think that's what it was) snakes are not corn snakes. I don't think i would give my corns any kind of fish, they are doing fine on f/t mice and want to keep it that way.

and i've also heard about a chemical in goldfish not being good for snakes. anyone else know more about this one?

i've heard of people feeding them rat pups, and sometimes small chicks. I've never done it, so I can't really tell you too much. Hopefully someone else jumps in soon and can tell you more

baby chicks are ok?

Basically I am just wondering whats ok for corns to eat, other than mice, and I heard gold fish were, but apparently not.

any small rodent; mice, rats, small gerbils and hamsters, etc. Young chicks and quail work, also. Being in Japan may limit (or expand) what you could feed a corn snake, in Zollowhex's case

If the diet is mixed with other fish they'll do fine, and I just read somewhere that there are breeders (of garters and watersnakes, here in the US) that feed an all goldfish diet to their snakes with no problems...

Oh, I'm an american boy, I just screwed up when creating my account.
:shrugs:

So some fish do work? And yea, I just wanted to know my variety.

You may think that eating mice all the time is boring to you and/or your snake, but they don't see it that way. It isn't like they mind eating mice and are thinking that there may be something else they'd rather eat. Other than rodents, certain small lizards and occasionally small birds, there's nothing else you need to look at to feed to your corn snake. It's good to ask, but snakes really don't get bored eating mice all the time! If they did, they would refuse the offered mouse repeatedly and then you would need to look for an alternative, such as rats, gerbils, anoles, chicks, etc., but probably not fish.

Yea, I know that. And I got a good amount of frozen mice, but I just really wanted to know the variety allowed to my snake, because I've only fed him mice.

So to be clear.

mice, chicks, hamsters, gerbils.

That it?

Baby chicks are fine, if the snake is large enough to handle them. Zebra finches are an excellent size and reproduce easily.

Where would you come across feeder finches?

Most pet stores have zebra or society finches for under ten dollars. Buy a male and a couple of females. They mate readily.

Corns will also eat smaller frogs and lizards.. Problem is, what do you do when they convert to a frog or lizard diet when you can't get any of the above at a reasonable price? I certainly would not feed them wild caught frogs/toads or lizards eithier.. But that is MHO.... Mice are fine as a staple diet.. I can't imagine a corn eatting fish, nor can I imagine trying to deal with the nasty, loose, greasy foul smelling fish fecal matter.. Pheewwww... Of course, that is my main turn of for the Garder snake side of the hobby..

Stick to what you know. If your snake is ok eating f/t mice, keep it doing so! Some people do feed other rodents though, but if you snake is happy and feeding without any problems, I wouldnt bother trying to change it.
