Good Deed for the Day

I just did mine, have you done yours?

I was driving home from work this afternoon, and was passing by the neighbor's orchard when I noticed something flapping like heck in one of the trees.

The closer I got, I saw it was a bird caught in the netting around their cherry tree. I thought the netting was to deter birds from eating the fruit, not tangle them up.

Soon as I realized what was going on, I threw the car in park and rushed over to help it. Now mind you, this is a type of bird I don't hold much respect for. Always stealing food and other bird's babies, and the only thing to their credit is their beauty. Go figure eh?

Its flapping frantically, and as I look around, I see why...one of the neighbor's long-since feral cats was stalking across the yard towards the tree. Its foot was badly hung up, and it was twisted so tight it was actually drawing blood from the bird's foot. I hadn't any knife or scissors in the car, so I just started using my teeth to tear the netting 5-6 inches away from the bird. Thankfully the netting was a few years old, and was brittle enough that it broke easily. Once I got ahold of the bird it immediately calmed down, and I went and got in the car and drove the long drive up to the house where I cut the offending netting from its foot.

The foot and leg doesn't appear broken, but I'm pretty sure his leg is hurting after all that writhing around trying to get free. Right now he's in a shoebox resting up before I release it. Hopefully I don't find it in the netting again. But I think I'm gonna keep scissors in the car from now on just to be sure.

And after the novel I just wrote, here are some pics:

Make sure you do your good deed for the day, no matter how insignificant it may be. =)

Wow! Very nice deed...I didn't do one yet today but it's still early..LOL

BTW, that is a bluejay right?

What a PRETTY bird! Right place, right time, eh? Way to go, Misty. :)

And my answer is "yes" (to stick with the thread). lol

And yes, that is a blue jay. Although they're a skittish bird by nature, I couldn't pass up the opprotunity to grab a few pictures.

Jen, I'm releasing him up here at our house (1/2 mile away) or over at my parents house (2 miles away), so in any case hopefully he doesn't go back to the tree again. ;)

Blue Jays are very nasty birds. Around here, they go after anything...other birds, squirrels, small dogs..LOL

We mostly get Stellar's Jays around here and they are bold!

I'm so glad you came to the aid of one of Gaia's children. Not many people would have cared or bothered. I would have been right there with you!

Last summer, a stellar's jay stole a half eaten apple right out of my hand (literally), then when he flew away and put the apple in the tree, he came back and proceeded to try to steal my sandwich (which I had laying on the table). Bold isn't the word I would use. We have very tame and bratty birds here. lol

He's a lovely looker, it was very good of you to stop for him. I love how the wing looks like a colour paint chip sample from the paint shop! We don't have BlueJays over here but we have a host of smart, vicious birds to make up for that! Last injured bird we came across was an almost adult gosling that had been hit by a car and had a nasty looking compound fractured leg so my boyfriend did the nasty job that had to be done for the poor critter. I picked up a pidgeon on the bike path last summer that had fallen out of the nest and was being harassed by ravens (would have eventually been eaten by them) and took him home but he didn't make it through the night...at least I tried I guess...

The best we can do it is try to help. It's especially sad when animals fall prey to mankind's inhumanity (hit by cars, eat the garbage we carelessly discard where it doesn't belong, etc.). But there are those of us who take the time and make the effort to right the wrong as best we can. We don't always succeed, but I think we learn from the experience and earn karma points for the effort. :wavey:
