Hello all. I'm Shawn! I bought a corn snake and accessories for the black friday sale at Petsmart, and I must say I'm already in love! I'm a 22-year-old Biology major at West Virginia State University. I used to be absolutely-terrified of snakes as a whole, until I decided to take the herpetology class, in which I'm currently enrolled. The class has given me the chance to learn about squamates, as well as other types of reptiles/amphibians, and has exposed me to many different live specimens. The first half of the course focused mostly on herping in the field in local parks (my most exciting find was a baby water snake, that I almost wanted to keep, haha!) and lakes, and we even had an alligator come and visit us during lecture! Anywho, I am excited to venture into this new form of husbandry! My experience with animal husbandry has been limited to dogs & cats here and there, an iguana long ago that we lost :(, and five fish tanks that are up and running now.

I have a couple of questions, to start things off.
1) From my reading on Ians vivarium, I believe my corn snake to be a 'normal' morph. Can this be confirmed with the attached picture? They had a crazy looking amelanistic one, but it had some dry scales so I picked the other one that exhibited a nice round body, healthy-looking eyes, a nice sheen, and oh so inquisitive!

2) Are there any 'golden standard' books that are good for a beginner hobbyist like me?

3) Is breeding a realistic hope for a college student?

4)What do the decimals in the signatures here mean? For example, I see 1.0 corn, 1.2 gecko, etc. Not saying I've seen those specific ones, but for example purposes.

1- Yes, that is a little normal, like the ones you'd find in the wild.

2- Kathy Love's corn snake manual is top notch.

3- Wait 3 years for your little one to grow up and then see. Are you prepared to keep up to 20 extra snakes if they don't sell?

4- They denote gender. Male.Female.Unknown.

Research is the key - start small with the basic morphs and work your way up. Don't get in a hurry to breed - ask lots of questions, there are really great people with lots of knowledge on this forum that are happy to help.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I have no clue where Westover is :p I would imagine if it's close to the Charleston area, you go to Specialty Pets in Nitro? They have such a good crew over there!
