Growth and housing

Hey, I have a cb15 corn snake make, he's around 3 months old and when last measured 31cm long, he's currently on his second shred with me had I'm since Christmas.

I have owned a full grown snake but never had a hatchling before so I was wondering how quick am I to expect him to grow?

He's currently being fed once a week on a large pinky.

He's currently house in a small hatchling box (not sure if that's there real name) my larger viv from my pervious snake is getting on a bit so wanted to make him a nice new viv for when he grows but am wondering how long I have to make it before he needs to come out of the small plastic viv.

Thank you

Hayley

They grow really quickly when they're young so be prepared to move him vivs soon! If he's longer than the length of his box you can move him up, just make sure to use lots of hides so he feels secure!

My corn doubled in weight (50g - 100g) from the start of August to the end of October if that gives you an idea of their growth!

Yes that helps will start on the little guys new viv tomorrow, I'm going to put in a removable wall so it's not too big for him to start with

Eco grate on the new baby! I would suggest that you feed him more than once a week if you want him to grow out. Refer to the Munson feeding chart. I feed my hatchlings every 4-5 days, but people who "power feed" feed them as often as every 3 days.

I don't necessarily want him to grow quicker then he needs too, I'm in no rush for him to get big just want to be ready for when he does need a bigger viv.

What's eco-grate?

Lol "Eco-grate" is apparently what predictive text thinks I wanted to say instead of "Congratualtions" lol

I wa t suggesting that you power feed your snake, but babies digest their meals much quicker than adults, probably because this is the period of their life where they grow the most. What you are feeding him right now isn't what I would consider enough, more like a "maintenance diet" in my opinion.

The Munson plan is considered by many to be the industry standard as far as feeding goes. There are several versions of the Munson plan out there, some more aggressive than others, but they all recommend feeding hatchlings more often than once a week.

Good Luck!

Ahh right makes sense now lol,

Will have a look at the Munson plan and then have a rethink on his feeding thank you

What I will say about the Munson Feeding Plan, is that it's very aggressive so people do tend to feed more conservatively. I fed my corn pinks once a week when I first got him as I had no idea about the plan or this forum and he grew just fine! Single pinks on five days will help them get out of their 'I'm a baby and everything wants to eat me' stage quicker!

I have moved away from large rat pinks, and Brough some mouse fluffys would giving him one of those with a top up a pink in-between the week be okay??

If you're feeding him fluffies then you won't need to feed an extra pink during the week, fluffies are a pretty big meal for them. He'll start growing really quickly once he's on fluffies as well [emoji2]

I have to ask, how much does your snake weigh? If he was big enough to be eating fluffy mice (which quite a bit larger than pinks), then why were you feeding him pinks?

I could be wrong, but I am beginning to get the impression that this is about you wanting to order a bunch of frozen mice. Which is fine, as that is what a lot of us do, but feeding your snake should be what is best for the snake.

Before going any further, you REALLY need to weigh your snake. Then you will know exactly what size it needs to be eating.

As far as any advice you may revive that says other wise, I would be very careful of "playing it by ear", at least if you really care about your snake.

I will also say, that this site is a wonderful resource with people here who have been keeping snakes for decades. I would read up on what those people suggest and ask questions before I made up my mind, before I went with advice from someone who hasn't had their snake much longer than you have had your own.

My post was about how quick he grows and then got onto feeding. I haven't weight him lately will do it today just to make sure.

The shop I got him from told me too feed him 1 pink a week for a month and then move him up too the larger rat pinks, the fluffies I have are no bigger than the large rat pinks.

I fed him the mice pinks once a week but then upped it to 2 as he was hungry (tried to eat my finger) I have mouse pinks, rat pinks and now small fluffies that I picked up yesterday at the pet store. I gave him one large rat pink last week but he took it and regulated it. When I spoke to the pet shop they said that it could be because of the taste of the rats being different and to try the fluffies so that's all I'm going off.

I have had a full grown corn before but never from a hatchling so feeding this guy is new too me
