Handling before feeding

I got my snakes on Friday and I know that this Friday is the end of the "no handling" period. But now I've just read that you should wait a week before feeding them? So, can I handle them and then feed them later in the evening? Or am I looking at an additional two days without holding my babies?

(Also, I assume making them wait a whole week for food isn't unsafe.)

I try and not handle to much the day of feeding. I'll get them out, check them over, weigh them then place into feeding bin. Once they've eaten and are moving about in the bin (about 20 min usually) I'll take them out and place them back in the viv.

A week without food is not a problem at all.

^^^^^^^^^Yup, this.

Like drybgerg I weigh and check over every snake and write down in a note book what they weighed, what they ate, what they didn't eat, if they are blue, in shed, and anything else out of the ordinary. I use an old fashioned Composition book but there are computer programs out there to enter the data into.

All right, thank you! I don't mind being patient, but my family's starting to get antsy. I had to politely tell them to get over it.

Once your snake is older and more comfortable with you, you can certainly handle before feeding. But while she is still adjusting to your setup, your routine, etc, I would try to limit stress on a feeding day. Once you've given her 2 or 3 days to digest, then feel free to handle her.

I've noticed that handling before feeding is usually a good time for my snake. She's probably gotten conditioned to handling = feeding next. She has no problems with either. So, after the first few weeks, keep it calm, but don't worry about handling and then feeding.

one of my snakes is fine with handling before being fed, but the other becomes distracted and doesn't want to eat.

My baby doesn't have a problem with handling then eating. She seems to not care what happened 's and always feeds when given prey.
