Heat Mats

To test the temp. of the heat mat you are using. Do you stick it to the bottom of the viv, then put the thermometer over the other side of the glass before the substrate? I wanna be sure before I put the little guy in there. Because now it is reading 98-99 degrees. Also, can I tape something down on the inside of the viv over the heat mat so it wont be too hot? Thanks.

If you're putting in substrate, measure the temp at the substrate. If you're putting a hide over the mat, make sure you measure the temp inside the hider at the substrate so that it's the temp your snake would feel. I taped doubled paper towel over my UTH because my snake likes to burrow and I was afraid she'd burn herself on the glass.

looks good

Thanks Meg, I taped a small slab of a pillow case in between the heat mat and the glass viv. It got the temp down to 94, this is when measuring the heat mat through the glass alone. Then I put a layer of substrate about 2-3 inches high. It looks about right. Current temps are 78 and 82.

Watts?!?!

I know that I said everything was fine with my hatchling, but I still stick my hand down his viv to find his heat mat being too hot. But then again, what is too hot? I know heat mats are sold with different wattages. I was just curious if anyone has a 20 gal. viv, or something like it, and what watt. do you use to find a perfect temp? If it helps, since its summer, the normal daily temp in my room is between 65-75 degrees. Thanks, all suggestions are helpful.

I have a 30 gl. but used an UTH that was sized for a 10-15gl.. I covered it with paper towel so that my burrowing critter wouldn't sit directly on the glass over the heater, and then have a couple of inches of substrate. My hider cave is fairly large and half of it is on the UTH the other not. My thermometer reads 82-84 on the substrate. It's probably a little warmer in the cave over the UTH but she can move to the other side of the cave and be warm, but not as warm as over the mat. I also have a hider cave on the cool side. I don't know what the wattage is, but I would assume it's standard for all the UTH's. Mid 90's would be too warm I would think.
