i am all new to owning corn snake just need a few answers if anyone can help how long should i keep the heat lamp on for and where should i keep it should it be on one side or should it be in the middle and do i need a heat mat

Its better to use an under tank heater (UTH) without the heat lamps. The heat lamps suck out all the humidity from the tank, resulting in a bad shed or other problems. Position the heat mat below one side of the tank. Hook up the UTH to a thermostat or a rheostat to keep the tempurature in both sides of the tank constant.

You don't need a heat lamp. You need an Under Tank Heater (UTH). Corns use belly heat for digestion. An overhead lamp is not needed for cornsnakes. And with the UTH, it goes on one side of the tank with a hide over it and you will need a thermostat or simple light dimmer switch to control the heat or it could go into the upper 100 degree mark. You will also need a good thermometer to keep an eye on the temps. We use the Acurite digital thermometers/hygrometers (humidity). You can get them and the light dimmer at Lowe's or Home Depot or a place of that nature. Also be sure to put another hide or vines, etc for them to hide in the cooler spots. They pretty much know what they need and when.
Good luck and let us know how it goes!
And pics would be great!
Ask any questions and we will be sure to help you out along your cornsnake ownership journey! And beware...cornsnakes are addicting!! You can't have just one!!!

I have a undertank heat map. Hope do I control the temperature it produces? Should I have it on 24/7. And im not going to turn on the heatlamp anymore.
Just fed my snake 2 pinkies right now. Its time to move up to bigger mice. I think he just considers the mice a snake chowing them down very fast.

A snack I mean.

You should use a thermostat with the heat mat. This can be set to the right temperature and left - it will automatically switch the mat on and off to maintain the correct temperature. You need to have that mid-80 degree warm spot at all times.

that is a thousand watt one :) i use that one for all my snake cages, but i have 3 set up. there is a 500 watt one if you only have one snake. but if you have multiples i recommend getting that one :) I love that thing and its great!

Keeps the bills down and is easily adjusted!
