Heating

Hey Guys,

Just bought my new carolina corn on friday, its about 14weeks old, i got a vivarium with it set up with two hiding areas, it came with a heat lamp installed with a 60W bulb. I keep the lamp on all day and usually only reaches 80-82 degrees, when i go to bed i turn the lamp off when i check the temp when i get up its usually says 64 degreees, what should i do to keep the night time temp 70+ degrees?

Thanx.

And you need a heat mat/under tank heater. The snake needs a warm side of 85 or so round the clock.

I'd be very surprised if a 60 watt bulb was really giving a temperature that low, in Blossom's viv we can't use 60 watt bulbs even with the rheostat because the temperature reaches high 90's and above straight away.
(How do I know, because her 40 watt bulb blew out and I only had energy saving bulbs and a spare 60 watt bulb in the house. Had to make an emergency shopping trip).

thanx for the quick replies, im measuring the temp with an exo terra thermometer, its at about 81 degrees at the moment, but when i turn it off at nite it goes to 65 degrees, should i keep the light on constent untill i get a heat mat?

its a stick on dial,, just being abit paranoid at the moment, because im new to caring for corn snakes, i dont want it dieing on me in the first week of having it :S

Those stick-on dials are next to useless, with an unregulated 60 watt bulb you could be easily getting highs of 100. You need a digital thermometer (try Maplins )as well as a thermostat to regulate whatever heat source you use.
For a bulb you'll need a proportional thermostat which will dim it rather than an on/off thermostat that will just blow the bulb, as well as a bulb guard to stop the snake burning itself.
If you use a heatmat instead, you will need a matstat, as no matter what it says on the packet or the people in the shop tell you, an unregulated mat can reach high enough temperatures to injure our snake

Thanx alot ill look into buying an electronic thermo reader. So seeing the dial thermo reader i have now says 65degrees in the morning when i wake up it would prolbably be 70ish? is it still ok for the nite time temp to be 65?

I wouldn't like to hazard a guess as to what your temperatures are in that set up. The heat should be constant, not fluctuating. Too high can cause neural damage or death, too low can allow respiratory infections to develop or cause regurgitation of food, both of which can quickly debilitate your snake.
